I have extremely dark pigmentation all around me my mouth, it started as a small spot 3 years ago and I have been going to many dermatologists since then, but nothing is helping. In fact it is just getting worse and worse, it is spreading like crazy! I am of desi/asian decent and have a pretty fair skin color, and the pigmentation is very dark brown. I have tried precription bleaching creams with hyrdroquinine, exfoliatiors, steroid creams, anitfungal creams and hydrocortizone! None of these even made the slightest difference. Does anyone know what this could be, why it is spreading and how to stop it? My dermatologist even allaergy tested my for all the creams and makeups I use and saw nothing in that either. No one can seem to figure out what this is and why I am getting it. Placid replied. I had the same issue as you did. I tried a lot of topical creams and i honestly believe the bleach based and hydroquinone creams actually make the area darker. Also a lot of creams that have failed clinical trials are promoted to Indian/Asian people like Fair and Lovely ect in order to lighten the skin, but sometimes the chemical makeup is damaging so the skin reacts in order to protect itself - that' s why some people see darkening not to mention the photo-sensitivity some of the creams cause. So if you are using any of these products, throw them in the bin.

Anyway, the problem was gone instantly after i went to my dermatologist and had a chemical peel (took about 5 days for all the skin to fall off). I think you can go to a beauty clinic and have a peel done there too. (Make sure it is conducted by a professional as it is your precious face)

The results were excellent the uneven skin tone was only on the top layer of skin. A friend on mine did the same treatment but she ended up using the creams mentioned above (lightening ones) and the uneven skin tone around the mouth area came back pretty quick.

P.S after the first week of the peel make sure you lather on the sunscreen - your skin is super photosensitive.

Anyway if everything fails you could always buy some concealer and cover it up - MAC makes an excellent concealer for Indian skintones.
