Hi, My 5 week old baby has been crying inconsolably in the nights for the past 2 days. He passes stool every 4 days ever since he is born, but this week, he has not passed it for around 5 days. We thought it must be constipation and took him to the doc and she says it is evening colic. We have been feeding him a combination of bottle and breast milk (to help him gain weight), we are trying to minimize bottle as much as possible. He always wants to be suckling and it is getting tough for us to handle. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated? seema mandrekar replied. hve u tried chng his bottle nipple....try another bottle brand(dr browns)....hve u tried suva seeds water....couple of my frnds who r formula feeding extensivley hve been adding suva water to their babies bottle ...fr e.g-if u make an 8 oz bttle add 4 oz of suva nd rest normal water......i too have an 2mnth baby (my 2nd) i started with formula supplementing at 3 weeks but i stopped suddenly coz my mom ws here to help me with my kids nd she left as gt sick...so nw i noticed him geeting gassy nd poop numbers hve reduced nd ws gassy fr an entire week,he doesnt take formula nw which i spoke to his ped nd chnged the brand thnkg he is gassy coz of it.....so keep trying like i m u might cme up with sme remedy.....my childs ped said colick passes away anywhere frm 3-6 mnths....so hang on...u will be fine seema mandrekar replied. hey anantha....i ws reading yr msg nd i would ask u to look at a book called wht to expect the first year by the sme authors who have written wht to expect when u r expecting...they hve sme suggestions on how u cld hold a colicky baby...another thing is tht when u breast feed yr baby try to burp him betw both the breast nd even try burping him on evry ounce of formula feed...might help..i hve tried burping my older son betw each breast when i ws breast feeding him(ws vry gassy nw an 2 1/2 yr old)....another thing is tht try asking yr babys ped abt prune juice coz itz said tht it help to relieve constipation nd do talk abt giving water which is a big no-no the first couple of mnths.... one more mom replied. hey
if u still face this problem, use bonnisan syrup ( 1/2 spoon in the evening say arnd 3-4 pm)
It cured colic completely when my son was suffering from it.
After 2-3 weeks stop giving it. no harm

I know what you are going through because my first child suffered from colic. I can tell you what all i tried which at times worked.

1. You can try and give your baby ajwain water just 1/4 of a spoon.This helps in easing the gas and relieving the pain.Its a home remedy which you can try if your comfortable with.
2.Use a cradle, because my baby at times used to get some relief when he was rocked during these colic attacks.Also when there is no one to help, a cradle acts as an extra hand.
3.Under supervision put your baby on his stomach and pat him, this helps in releasing the gas and giving relief.
4.Gripe water also helps in some cases but doctors do not recommend that nowaday, so pls check.
5.Lastly this phase will last till your child is 3 months old, so be mentally prepared for these three months.
6.Since you know that evenings with colicy baby are going to be bad, make sure you finish of all your work in the day only.Even prepare your evening food early, so that you are not overtired with the evening stress of a crying baby.
7.Last but not the least make sure your husband helps you to tide through this time and for any reason if he is not able to help, either keep a maid or make sure someone stays with you to help you out.Good luck.
