Dear all
Please recall my input dated 2013-03-29 about we all growing hair after that year' s July tonsure for Venidaan after four years. Finally all the seven of us visited Prayag immediately after Vijayadashami. We left for Prayag (Allahabad) by Sanghamitra Exp in the night of 15th and reached Allahabad around 2 am on 17th. We had booked a dormitory where per beds on per bed charge are available. We rested for a while, got up around 8 am and went to Triveni Sangam. My mil' s hair had reached her mid back while for me and my daughter Ramya it had grown to our waists.
As per scriptures, all the four gents got their heads tonsured clean on the banks of Ganga. The long hair of Ramya was also tonsured clean. She got it done happily. All of us bathed in the Ganga and wore new clothes. Fil braided the hair of mil and my bald hubby braided my hair. Both of us wore some flowers in our hairs. We climbed the boat along with two more couples and the pujari to travel to Sangam spot with all material for Venidaan. On reaching the spot the pujari said some mantras starting the Venidaan rituals. We had told him that in both of our cases almost the entire braid would be cut off by our husbands. The gents of the other two couples cut only about three inches of their wives. First, my fil cut off almost the entire braid of my mil leaving only about 5 to 6 inches of hair on the head. Next, my hubby did the same thing to me, cutting of most of my braid with scissors. The women of the other two couples were shocked to see that. But, I was so happy thinking ' Good bye, long hair, for ever in this life' . After that all the four couples did Venidaan pooja keeping the cut braids in our palm, doing pooja to it and leaving it in the Sangam with mantra.
After coming back to the bank, both mil and myself got our heads fully shaved, first time on the banks of a river. I thought that this might be something I may do so again in future. First my mil' s head was shaved clean by the barber and then next my head was also rendered bald. We had a repeat bath in the Ganga and then came to a building where we had arranged for ceremonial food.
By then it was almost 1 pm. Now all the seven of us are bald, with shining pates. All of us were very happy. Mil will grow her hair long again. I will start getting my machine cut from January onwards. But for an occasional Tirupati gundu (say once in two or three years) I will keep it a machine boy cut regularly. I am eagerly looking forward to it.
We all 7 baldies boarded the Sanghamitra train on 18th early morning (around 2 am) and reached Vijaywada on 19th morning.
When I went to Bank on 21st, all were smiles looking at my clean pate. Currently I am in Cash counter. Ramya had a tough experience, what with many of her friends taking a swipe on her bare and smooth bald head, of course, in jest. Anyway she is very happy that she is bald. She wanted a full clipper head shave at the earliest, just for the feel of it. So today morning, I took her to the barber shop where the barber ran the clipper on her head (about half inch of hair had grown) without any attachment leaving her head sandpapery. A beaming Ramya climbed down from the chair. She will have her next hair cut (a crew cut) in Jan 14.
