Hair Care:sons hairstyle

hi i have a son,9 yrs old ,rishi.i am not religious and so is my husband, but recently my mother in law moved in with us.she is very religious and was shocked when she learnt rishi was not ear pierced.i did not understand the point of piercing a boy' s ear and making him wear earrings and any way the earrings are going to be removed from his ears after 2 or 3 years and hence rishi' s ears were not pierced.but my mil said that in their community boys are not eligible for marriage unless these ceremonies are performed.

hence i had to do the ceremony, and rishi was ear pierced, the earrings were gifted by my mil.the earrings which are dangle type earrings which keep jiggling around if there is even very slight movement changed rishi' s look and made him look very feminine.but his hairstyle does not suit his new looks, hence i want a gender neutral style for rishi.my beautician said mushroom cut will look good on him,i want your opinion.he has thick straight hair.please mention any other characteristic like which parting etc.

hi akshaya ravi,
i know how difficult it is to make kids listen to you, couple of years ago we had the ear piercing ceremony of my 10 yr old nephew and it proved to be really difficult.even after the ceremony the boy kept on pulling his earrings until they broke.even today he wears those earrings.
the hairstyles that you have chosen like a bowl cut and bob cut are all medium length hairstyles.your aim is to make rishi look like a girl, because now he has a feminine earrings but boyish haircut which makes him look weird.i think you can try long hairstyles on him.what about a 2 plaited \" school girl\" hairstyle, where the hair is middle parted from the front to the rear and the 2 plaits are braided.you can also fringes with a pony tail,or just open hair with middle or side partings.

dear ITgirl,
kids are so unmanageable,it took us a lot of effort to pierce rishis ear,so much so that we dropped the plan of shaving his head! the only relief i got is that after 2 months he is now very comfortable with his earrings and does not pull or try to remove his earrings.i think initially he was uncomfortable with having a considerable weight hanging and swinging from his ear lobes.also the piercing was traditional and he had an infection at the piercing for 3 weeks and hence it was very painful for him.

and thanks for your suggestions for rishi´ s hairstyle.even my favouriten is the 2 plait hairstyle,it would make him look like a 7 year old girl, and so cute.but his hair is not very long thats why i did not want to go for those hairstyles.initially i tried the 2 plait, but his hair was simply too short.so i have decided to wait for 3 months to get that length of hair, till then i have decided to give him a new hairdo.

thanks for the reply sanjana.I asked my mil whether i can change rishi' s earrings to studs or smaller hoops, but she said a big no.so rishi is going to have the earrings in his ear lobes for 3 years.
but the good thing is he is now very comfortable in the earrings, initially it was difficult for him to sleep with the earrings, but now he has adjusted and learned not to sleep sideways.also even i am happy as the earrings actually look very good on him and he looks much better than before, and the only problem is the hairstyle.
i told rishi about my plans for him,and surprisingly even he was okay with a girlish hairstyle, much to my relief.so now i have more plans to make him look more normal.

sanjana, could you please tell more about the hairstyles as i don' t understand the technical terms, and what is the difference between a bowl and bob cut?also are bowl and mushroom cut the same?

based on your replies, rishi has oval face, thick and straight hair.also the earrings he is wearing are quite long, ornate and bulky.and i presume you wouldn' t be removing them any time soon.

taking these into mind,a bowl cut with fringes would be perfect for rishi.the fringes must be what we call \" blunt\" or \" full\" ,that is it must hang down till the eyebrows.given the oval face the parting must be a middle parted one to better frame the face.

dear akshaya,
i am very surprised to see that you are pondering so much about your son' s hairstyle.usually when a boy has the ear piercing ceremony done to him,it is accompanied by the shaving of his head.so i think you should have done that.

i am myself a mother of a boy and a girl.while for my daughter we spend a lot for straightening, coloring and styling her hair, for my son we spend less than 5 rupees.every 2 weeks we take him to the terrace, remove his clothes, spread his legs, bend his head forward and shave!
the cost here is only for the new razor blade.the shaving is so easy that me or my daughter ourselves shave his head instead of relying on a barber.

dear shruthi,
of course, the original plan was to shave rishi´ s head during the ceremony, but it took so much effort just to convince rishi, and get his ears pierced that we gave up on tonsuring his head.managing a 9 year old boy is very difficult indeed.

since i work at a parlor i can provide you with some suggestions.could you describe more about the earrings that rishi is wearing? by dangling earrings do you mean the \" gimmiki\" type earring?

it is very hard to remove the earrings which are screwed in tightly.we call them \" screw back\" earrings, the screw of the earrings are screwed so tightly against the earrings using pliers that they get jammed.we regularly do this at our parlor as well, it is done to prevent kids from removing the earrings themselves.

wearing long earrings would definitely make anyone look very effeminate, but that is not a bad thing.as you said a neutral hairstyle would suit rishi perfectly.mushroom cut or bowl cut and even the bob cut would be perfect for him.could you describe his face structure? so i can suggest more about which parting and whether fringe should be there or not.

dear sanjana,
thank you very much for your reply and its good to have a professional.the earrings are gimmiki types and have 3 ´ levels´ with some intricate work and ends with a freshwater pearl.according to my mother in law the pearl in the earring is very important.

the earring had to be screwed tightly otherwise rishi would remove it.

he has an oval face.

You may not be religious but it does not mean you have the right to snatch away the tradition from your son. Once he grows up, it is for him to stick on to the tradition or not.
Coming to your question of suitable hairstyle for your son with dangle type earrings:

1. Convince your mil that he could wear them only occasionally but in general and also to school, he can wear studs on both the ears.

2. With studs, any of the following hairstyles look male and cute on boys of his age:
(a) full bald
(b) a crew cut - closely clippered to skin all round and about half inch on top
(c) a tuft at the crown and the remaining shaved to skin - like a pujari
(d) a normal boys scissor cut

3. A mush room cut really looks bad on a boy that too with jingling ear rings.

It is upto you to make your choice.

dear ram
thank you for your suggestion.ofcourse i would not deny my son the tradition.the earrings are screwed very tightly to the back of his ear,to prevent rishi from removing the earrings himself.so it is very difficult to remove it.
so for these earrings the hairstyles you have mentioned do not suit.and mushroom cut is not bad according to me.
