Joint Family:Difficult situation
2005-02-01
Name: Help Needed

Hi,
It’s me again with my difficult situation (its a follow up of my last problem i mentioned). I was recently talking to one of my husband’s distant relative (aunt) and she told me that my MIL told her all this. That we (my husband and I) are moving back to India next year. We haven't even mentioned anything about it. My husband and I both want to settle here but my MIL is creating such an unbearable situation. My husband is working since long and he doesn’t want to leave such an excellent job and I recently started my new job which is also very good and I am fully satisfied. To put it this way my husband and I are fully satisfied with our jobs and work environment and don’t want to make any changes. Especially at this stage when he is at a very high rank and expecting another promotion. Now she has spread this rumor among all the relatives. As I said we have to go this summer also, I am just frightened by the thought of facing her. Why is she such a pain in the neck? We visit them once a year and she already has some problems created for us. Now when I visit all the relatives they will have this question and to make it worse she will be accompanying us with her sorry and grim face. She always tries putting us down and driving us nuts. It makes me sick every time I think about her and here machinations.
Help me :(

Dear Friend
This indeed is a sticky position and hats off to your MIL to come up with it. Seems she has deliberately wanted to embarrass you guys infront of relatives...well two can play at a game :)
Whenever any relative brings it up say,\";Yes we are thinking about it. Nothing is definite yet but yes we are working towards it.\";
That is it...you dont need to divulge any complicated reasons...just some non commital words giving an impression to everyone that you are doing and thinking about it for your MIL's sake...that will take care of your vacation and any others which you guys would eventually take...repeat the same record again and again...:)

Parents should be happy that their kids are doing well in life. They should be proud of their achievements...I have a friend here in US and her IL's tell encourage them to do better whereever they are. They say that they are healthy enough of take care of themselves now but later when they are not, they will stay with their children whereever they are at that point of life...I wish everyone had such nice, supportive and understanding IL's...

Cheers!

Don't give anyone the charge of making decisions about you n your family. By feeling pressured you sort of do that. Just brush it aside as if nothings happened. People try to manipulate your lives only if you allow them to do so. Express total indifference to any such issues. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Your MIL may come up with more of these in future. But if you teach her your boundaries sooner, the better it is for your. Like augustborn said, be vague about your plans on moving to india. Enjoy your vacation !!

Should a single man live with his mum in India?
I am a man in my late 40s and I have lived abroad in USA for the past two decades. I never had any interest in marrying or having kids so I never married. Recently my Dad passed away and my mother will be alone. I have made enough money to retire comfortably but because I am used to the American lifestyle I can't live in India. Recently my relatives have started saying tha... - Venkat Dabri [View Message]
