Due Date Club December 2006:doubt..eating spicy hot food

Hello girls,

I sometimes suddenly crave for eating pickles i mean the Indian stored pickles made up of mango, lemon etc. I just immediately eat them along with rice.

My mother-in-law told me in the beginning of pregnancy itself that I should avoid eating pickles as they are made up of red chilly powder and are very hot. I kept her words in mind and I tried to implement it. But, sometimes when I really really want to eat...I just eat them.

Today I ate lemon pickle....and I see that my hand is burning even till now. That means how much spicy and hot it should be in my stomach!!! Will this really effect the baby ???. Now I am worried. But I don't have any burning sensation or constipation or uneasiness in my stomach..I am just normal.

What do you girls think on this issue? Do we need to avoid eating such spicy hot food even occasionally?

I actually googled about eating spicy hot food in pregnancy and I saw that every where it said..it is safe to continue to eat spicy food, if you don't get problems like heartburn, constipation etc etc.

Hello you two,

It's been a while since I corresponded with either of you. Just wanted to say hello. How are you both doing? Getting bigger for sure!

Blessed_mom: You could check with your doctor, but I have eaten spicy food during both pregnancies. My doc said that since I consume spicy food on a regular basis it should not matter as long as I was comfortable. Taking it one step further...I took spicy food during the later months of breastfeeding too. I took it easy in the first month of breastfeeding and slowly re-introduced. Since my child did not show signs of fussiness or other reactions, the pediatrician felt it was okay to continue.

But please do double check. Warm regards!

TA

Hey ...

i have been craving for spicy food right from the beg of my pregnancy , and i had been having pretty spicy food till last month bcoz my body was not compalining :) ..

however nowadays i sufer from severe heartburn and i automatically steer away from spicy food ...

so my advice would be just listen to your body ... if your body is able to take it and does not repsond badly , i do not see any reason why it should be bad for you :) :) ...

anyway take care ...

Hi Blessed mom,

i am from nov board.like u even i sometimes i do have strong desire for hot spicy foods.most of the time i do control but sometimes i eat it once in a while.my Dr told me u can have it sometimes if u do not experience any heartburn.my dr is always very cool about eating things.he told me that his wife during preg had consumed coffee and cold drinks all thru out the preg but nothing happened.she delivered healthy babies.but still i do take care about foods.every preg is different.
its ok to have once in a while but not always.
its better if u ask your dr and please let me know his opinion.take care
