we visited the valley last year and were completely spellbound. i mean nothing that you have read or photos that you have seen can prepare you for the site of the acres upon acres of brilliant flowers with the snowy mountians in the background.

one thing important is to carry a guide to the flowers... or contact someone there who can show you around. its a beautiful expereince to see them all, but you miss out on the ecological significance if you have no clue as to what are the flowers you are seeing.

yiu´ ll have to look for a book on wild flowers of india. I used Common Indian Wild flowers by Isaac Kehimkar which features some of the more common flowers you are likely to see in the Valley

Thanks for writing about the Valley of Flowers. However, this is just one of India' s innumerable natural wonders that need to be protected against the onslaught of unplanned, irresponsible tourism.

Visit this beautiful place, but also take care not to damage this eco-sensitive and fragile environment in any way.

If you are really serious, better you check (either with the Uttarkhand tourism dept. or someone who organisers trips to the Valley) about your travel dates.

If september is too late, you may not see much of the flowers.
