Adoption:Court Date
2006-07-31
Name: Hema Gopinathan

We had our court date today. We were Foster parents to our 16 month adopted son for the last 3 months. I was hoping we would get the court order that our son was legally ours now. But turns out the judge wanted one more paper- the birth certificate of our biological older daughter. Our lawyer had not instructed us. So now we have to go back with the BC soon.
It was my first time at any court and the efficiency and the commitment of the judge took me by surprise- is this the new India we are all talking about?

Hi Hema,

I have adopted a baby girl 2 yrs back from BSSK, aurangabad. I must agree with you. The efficiency of the agency as well as the court has left me amazed. We adopted Ira in aug 2004 and by first week of dec 2004 we had the court order and Feb 2005 i had her passport. So its worth completing all the documents and getting the court order

Of late I have been hearing only happy stories about the state of adoption in our country. The Judge we met was also really compassinate, yet meticulous. Really I dont know of anyone who's had a tough time adoting atleast in Maharashtra.
Are you from India?

Hi Hema,
This will be our first child. I need to find out whether we will be adopt to infant as I will be 38 soon and my husband wll be 42. Genderwise, I would prefer a girl, but I heard that the wait is longer.
One of the parents need to be a U.S. citizen in order to bring the child back to U.S. If you are on a green card, you cannot stay in India for more than 6 months. Lots of beauracracy.

Can you tell me a little bit about Bal Asha and the way hey treat the kids in the orphanage.

I am sure your little one is adorable and must be keeping you very busy.

-Tanya

Hi Ria,
What kind of Info do you have? Are u in the U.S.?

Yes I also heard that the wait for girls is longer. In our case we didnt have a choice, we already had a biological daughter, so if we wanted to be 'legal' parents, we can only adopt a boy. In that sense things were taken care of for us regarding choice.
Bal Asha seems to be a cheerful place The social worker in charge seems geniunly comitted to get the children adopted into good homes. He is clear that his is not an orphanage. We werent allowed into the nursery- our daughter was. But from a sort didtance it was a place with big windows and cheerful pink cribs. they seemed to have lots of toys and the children ( we saw a few older children)are clean and well-dressed. the Ayah-bais also seemed cheerful and happy ( well-paid?). Infact one of the ayahs to whom our son Dev was attached was quite tearful and really loving towards him when we left, as was he to her.
They have the top pediatricians in attendance- on fact the doctor also attends to Sachin Tendulkars children :|
Dev seems to have had a happyish life thus far...He is intelligent, sensitive, responsive and on par with the height, weight, development parametres of his age group. And he's gorgeous :)

Ya, its definitely worth it.

We live in the U.S., but are originally from Mumbai. We are looking to adopt - its going to be a long road as we are still waiting to get our U.S. citizenship first.

I will check whether Bal Asha Trust is approved for intercountry adoptions. I was leaning towards BalVikas in Malad (E) as it is close to where my parents live.

You can adopt as NRIs too or are you waiting for the citizenship thing to get over?
Bal Asha is approved for inter-country adotion. At the same time as we were going through the process, they were in the thick of organising the US visas for 2 little girls.
But it makes a lot of sense to have your mom's home nearby. Bal Asha is near the race course.
Will this be your first child? What age group, gender are you looking at?
Regards, Hema

Yup. I'm sorry too. Now I have to go extract the birth certificate from the school. Then re-submit my petition etc. But I'm putting on an 'its worth it' face and it is, isnt it?
I live in Mumbai, India. The most efficient, committed city for adoption in India. My agency was the Bal Asha Trust- super efficient and if I can use the word- proffesional.
I guess you live in the US? Are you looking to adopt or are you an adoptive parent?
