Due Date Club December 2006:TA, P and others on board--Advice

Hello,

Today morning I have seen quite a lot of blood from back side when passing stools. It made the water into red. I know it is because of hemorroids, heat in the body and due to the iron in prenatal vitamin. I made sure that the blood is from anus and NOT from vagina.

I called my OB-GYN, but she's out of town. So i called 24/7 Nurse-advice line. The nurse asked me a few questions like whether I am having abdominal cramps, feeling dizzy, back pain etc etc. I said NO. Finally, she said \";you need to be seen in an emergency room,it might be due to internal bleeding.\";

I am pretty sure that it is just due to heat in the body, and didn't consider her words. I immediately called to another doctor, who's a substitute for my GYN. He said nothing to worry and ask me to take a few over the counter tablets like anucil etc.

I don't want to take any tablets. I want to take home remedies, like drinking sugar water, lassi (buttermilk + sugar + water). What other home remedies can I have to reduce heat in the body. Coconut water is a good option. But since we don't get Coconut bondas in USA, we can't do anything :-(

Which food contains fibre? I eat Raisin bran cereal, i think it contains fibre. apple contains fibre. can you suggest few more?

This is my today's update. I don't want to immediately believe 24/7 nurse's advice from now on. They just try to scare people i think.

Hi Blessed mom,

I had the same problem, and my ob-gyn told me to take fibre supplement tablet, which i didn't wanna take. SO she told me to eat tums... it acts like a calcium supplement and also helps your bowel movements. She said though dont eat a lot since if eaten too many .. they may cause diarreoha( i know the sp is wrong..) I'm also taking raisin bran, which also helps. Having Buttermilk with bhuna jeera is also good.

But i do hope you went to your ob-gyn.

Let us know how are you feeling now.

Take Care
Poochy

I think your bleeding might need something more than home remedies to heal. Have you been having hard stools or did this happen suddenly? Did you have hemorrhoids before getting pregnant? From what I've read, the pregnancy related one happens much later in third trimester.

Even if it is nothing serious, a trip to the doctor tomorrow can ascertain the right cause. Bleeding, regardless of where it is coming from should be checked during pregnancy.

I think phone triage nurses are in a tough position. If they warn us too much we get irritated (myself included!). But if they don't warn us we blame them if something happens later :-)

Check this out. Even there it says you should be seen.

I didn't mean to alarm you. Just wanted to make sure you are okay.

Take care, TA

Hi TA,

thanks for your message. Ya, I am having hard and dark stools since the time i started prenatal vitamins. And, I already have hemorrhoids before becoming pregnant. And since last 4 days i am not eating very regularly on time. May be these things caused the bleeding from anus.

But as you said, i don't want to take any kind of risk. I will meet my GYN asap. Thanks a lot for your suggestions:-)

Take care,
