Due Date Club September 2007:Tooth Extraction During Pregnancy

Hello Mommies,

Have been really busy at work and hence have not had a chance to log in to this site. Hope all of you are doing fine.

I am now 23 weeks pregnant, the problem is that my left lower wisdom tooth which was lying dormant all these years has suddenly decided to spring up. There is a layer of muscle that covers this tooth and also there isn' t enough space for the tooth to come out.

I dont know whether its the frequent meals that I have been eating, but now the gum is kind of inflamed and whole area around the tooth hurts.

I met a dentist who said that the tooth would have to be removed since there is no place for it to come out. Also I would need to get an xray done, he says the xray would be taken very carefully covering the stomach etc. My gyn also feels that the 2nd trimester is the best time if I need to get an extraction done.

I really do not want to go in for an extraction now, as I' m not sure how the antibiotics and the pain killers I would be taking would affect the baby.

Has anyone else gone in for an extraction during their pregnancy ? Also any thoughts on the effect of getting an extraction done after my delivery... Is it ok to hold up for so long? Am really worried .....

Hi Sue,
I also had bad tooth. If i eat fruits or drank milk it hurt .When it pains i used to keep hot water bottle on that place and lie down.
Vn i asked doc. she also told 2nd trimester is the best time to take tooth.
When i told dentist i was afraid to take x-rays and pain medicines during pregnancy.
She completly cleaned all the teeth . Its temporary relief. Now i am fine.

Take care
With luv,
Sweety.

Hi Sue,
I hear you on the wisdom tooth..It' s best to talk to your ObGyn, not your dentist about what would be best during pregnancy. Instead of taking antibiotics to heal the pain, it would be better to remove the wisdom tooth and get over it.. I am sure the dentist would cover you with 2-3 lead blankets to keep your baby safe. I think your dr should be able to advice you better ..
Keep ObGyn in loop with whats happening... Sorry dont think this reply would have helped you much.. Let us know how it goes.. Good luck!

Cheers,
Rose
