Due Date Club April 2004:Is Epidural safe?

Hello Everyone,
I'm very confused about taking Epidural. Some of my friends says its the best thing to releive the pain and has no side effects but i'm realy not sure of this. I've still not talked with my doctor about it, so may be some of you can help me and others with same question.

Hi Anuya,

Epidural is given when the patient feels that the pain is unbearable. As far as i know, its relatively safe as less dose is needed to reduce the pain. but may cause the labor to be longer.

Anuya,

If you are in US, most of the docs here recommend you to take epidural as the pain is a bit hard to cope with. But if you think you can do without it I think it will be good as from what my doc said when you take epidural the time of delivery will be longer. The truth is its going to be painful but I am going for it as my sis did it without the help of any medicine and she too is telling me its not that unbearable. You may have to exercise and keep yourself active from atleast 7th month onwards and if its safe for the baby at the time of delivery its good to go without an epidural.
