Hi all:

I had a question. Are u girls feeding on demand or on time basis ?. I am soo confused and always worried whether my son is getting sufficient milk. I feel he sleeps a lot. When he feeds on demand, he drinks well. If I force, the quantity is very less and he sleeps during the feed.

The doc is not worried since during his 2nd week checkup his weight gain was good. But people at home keep complaining that I am not feeding properly and allowing the baby to sleep while feeding. So I am confused.

Also, which oil are u using for massage ?. I used J&J baby oil for my elder one and till now I am using the same for second too. Some people suggested mustard oil and coconut oil. Any idea ?.

Kalpana

Hi,

Infant shud get fed every 3 hours normally during day time & cud be a 6-8 hours break during night time. feeding shud take min 15 min to max 30 mins. If he is not getting enough milk in day time then he will cry at night. that way u can find out that he is fed enough.
secondly If the baby cries for feeding every hour or hour & a half then also its an alert to you to meet doc.
baby shud have around 10 diapers a days with 3-4 real Messy ones that way also u can make out if he is fed enough.
Also its normal to loose weight before gaining for babies , ideally baby shud be of same weight as it was at time of birth after 2 weeks, so dont worry & u also have to be stress free to produce more milk, so dont take things to your heart when u get bothered by ur family-friends.
its good idea to Undress the baby before feeding if it sleeps while getting fed. & u can gently masage behind ears to wake him up. if still it sleeps then that means he/she is done.
J&J is good but u can try Coconut oil for massage in summers & may be mustered oil before bath once a week. see mustered oil is very good but not everyday, it darkens the skin color.

Hi Kalpana,

I had the same doubts in the first week. Bu as assured by the doctor my paediatrician also said as long as the babay is gaining weight there is no problem. M baby takes feed sometimes after 1.5 hrs, sometimes after 3-4 hrs. I am doing feeding always on demand basis. So keep going, don' t worry as long as the weight gain is fine.

Best wishes,
Perky

hello
it is fine if the doctor says that everything is fine...if the baby' s heart gain is fine and the doctor is happy then nothing like that...just keep doing what you are doing.....and ya i am using desi ghee for massage coz that is what my mother and grandmother recommended....though the doctor recommended almond oil.....J n J is good .....all the best and take are care...

i consulted with 3-4 docs regarding the same problem since back home they started scaring me that maybe my milk is not suficient and all sorts of rubbish but docs assured me that some babies drink in instalments and so its ok and that in such babies u have to feed on demand thats the only way they put on weight for my 2nd one i tried force feeding every 2 hours as per elders at home but till today at 18 mths she is still underweight
