If you have very oily skin, yes soap will dry out your face, but washing your face too many times will only make your face oilier. This is because your skin will overcompensate for the oil that is being taken away. The more oil you wash off, the more oil will come back. The solution is to find a soap that is good for oily skin, but won't overdry your face. Secondly, have a good astringent that has salycilic acid in it. Thirdly, when you moisturize....only use an oil-free lotion and never use a cream. As far as what to use, I would suggest you use the Clinique 3-step skin care system. You should use the Extra-Strength Facial Soap, Clarifying lotion #3 (astringent with salicylic acid), and Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel as a moisturizer. After doing this in the morning, if you use makeup, only use one that is oil-free. Before dusting on powder in the middle of the day, blot your face with plain toilet paper...this blots up the oil before you put powder on (oil and sweat will make your solid powder cake up and it will be hard to apply). You would do the 3 step skin care twice a day. I have used this system since July of 1999, and it hasn't failed me yet. If you want to go the cheaper route, I would use Neutrogena original face soap (clear orange soap), the astringent with salicylic acid (clear blue astringent), and Daily defense moisturizer with SPF 30 (this is lightweight and won't cause breakouts). The plan is just to blot your face and never overwash your face.
