Miscarriage and Child Loss:growth problems found in level 2 ultrasound

Name: sonia kapoor

This is the first time I am posting my message but I am reading this website since last 6 months.
I am 27 years old and got pregnant in april. Last month when I was 20 weeks,I had the level 2 ultrasound and doctor told me that the baby had excessive fluids in the brain so they called me back after 4 weeks. I went there on last friday and the doctors found a couple of problems.
First he said the baby had fluids in his brain. Second he said the baby's head is 24 weeks which corresponds to my pregnancy weeks but his said his body is only of a 21 weeks fetus. I asked about the gender of the baby but he mentioned something about Ambiguous Genitiala where its hard to say if its a boy or girl.
He recommend us to get the Aminocenthesis test to rule out any chromosomal abnormalities but me and my husband are very relcutant.
I have never heard of all these things in my life and we both don't have any family history of these problems.
Last year I had the miscarriage at 7 weeks and i got pregnant again trying after 7 months. I am so depressed and don't know what to do. My doctor is going to transfer me to another hospital for high risk pregnancy but she is on vacation now.
I can't concentrate on anything and don't know what is going to happen.
Sonia

Dear Sonia,

This must be the one of the worst times of your life. I hope you will take my message in the right spirit. If you think differently for a minute, the amnio is almost 99% certain to reveal any chromosomal abnormalities. Some of those abnormalities occur even if you are young and do not have any family history. If you go for the amnio it will give peace of mind for the rest of the pregnancy. Otherwise you will be uncertain right till the end and that tension is not good for you or baby.

At this point I do not think it will be right to give my story. But please know that I have been in a similar situation in deciding about amnio last year. I can very well understand how confused you and your husband are.

Another question you should ask yourself is whether you are prepared to raise a child who might have some problems due to the chromosomal issues. There are some couples who refuse any testing since they are ready to face any consequence. Others want to be more certain of the health and mental status of the child during pregnancy itself. This is something that you and your husband can alone answer.

In the US, I was told that results of amnio take 2 weeks. I am not sure where you are located. You should also consider the time taken to get back results. By then the pregnancy would have also advanced. So, make your decision keeping that in mind too.

I will definitely say a prayer for you, hubby and the little one. Please keep in touch in this board if you need anything else.

My best wishes, Aarti
