Hi,

This is Arpita. I have very long & thick hair. I took a vow when I was in my 10th class to offer my hair if I get through the exams. I will be getting engaged soon. My fiance had a vow too and will be tonsuring his head few days after the engagement. He felt sad when I told him about my vow. He likes my hair a lot. He also does not want me to postpone this forever.I am not sure whether I should go for tonsure or cutting some of my hair. Also I am having tough time to decide on when to do this. Has anyone come across situation like this? If so please advise me.

Though I have never heard of such a situation, u really had a pragmatic approach to the situation in hand before u. u took decision with a cool head no nervousness or tension. i really appreciate that. in a country like USA, i believe sporting a bald look by women is not considered a taboo !! I wanted to get this done at temple. But I could not do it there. With my fiance' s help I got 3 little pieces of my hair cut at the temple in the morning. After that we thought of getting the full tonsure at a saloon. we went to a couple of places and they were crowded. we thought of doing it next day. For some reason I was not comfortable doing it at saloon. So, On the way home I discussed this with my fiance and with a lot of requesting I convinced him to help me getting it done at home. As I just moved to this city, I am still staying in a hotel. We stopped at hotel & I packed few things I need & went to his apartment. First he did cut my hair all the way to ear length with scissors. Then cut it again very close to scalp. And then finaly did a clean shave with his mac 3 razor & shaving gel.
It looks different now with bald head. As said earlier, I am happy it got done after so much postponing. I am not too much worried about the look. I will be working from home till the last week of January and will work at my client' s place after that. No one there saw me till now.
It is very cold here & I am covering my head all the time I go out.

I just saw your message. Thank you very much for your advice. I already got my tonsure today. As we have plenty of time before the marriage, I decided to go for it now instead of postponing it to after marriage. Hopefully I will have decent length of hair by marriage time. Delayed this too long and I am happy now that it' s done.

You have not given full details. How old are you? When is your engagement and when are you getting married? Are you working? What have you studied? Why there was delay in fulfilling the tonsure vow? 10th standard to marriageable age is at least 3 years, generally about 5 to 8 years nowadays - time long enough for two tonsures with full growth in between.
Anyway, vow is vow and you have to fulfil it with a smile. I suggest that you can only have three cuts now and go for full tonsure some time after the marriage, not later than three months after marriage. Do not worry. Do the tonsure happily. You will get back your full length of hair in about three or four years. I had my first tonsure two weeks after my marriage and I tonsure every five years. And I am very happy about my tonsures.
