Hi Shree,
Folic Acid is most effective in preventing neural tube defects in fetus if taken three months before u conceive. Neural tube (spinal cord) in fetus is one of the first organs to develop in early pregnancy. so if you know you are going to conceive, there is no harm in starting to take it asap. You can also start taking prenatat vitamins, which have folic acid in them, and will keep you healty when you conceive. Studies show that in US women who don' t take folic acid at all have approximately 8-10% chance that the baby will have neural tube defect, and women who take folic acid atleast 3 months before they conceive only 1-2% chance of neural tube defect.

good luck
Pooja

Hi Shree...

Ideally you should be taking Folic Acid tablets before you conceive. Though in the case of unplanned pregnancies, women start taking Folic Acid tablets after they test positive. And nothing goes wrong in that case I suppose but I believe if a person has made a conscious decision to TTC then one should make a conscious decision to start the medication and other pre-requisities to have a healthy pregnancy. Don' t change your doc if you are comfy with her. But if I were in her place I would definitely recomment Folic Acid tablets right away.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

The medicine I had been prescribed by my previous GYN was Fol5. I changed my GYN in between and the new one is also on board with the same one. So I´ m continuing with Fol5. There are others that recommend Folvite.
