hello,

I have a history of irregular periods. They are always prolonged. Sometimes my cycles become as long as 35-40 days. I had consulted my doctor on this issue in late 2005. She did my ultrasound and put me on Novelon for 3 months. Everything went on fine in those 3 months and also the 3 months following that. But then my periods became irregular again. I was planning a baby at that time but had to go to my gynae again. She did an ultrasound on me and told me that I had PCOD and that it was difficult to have a baby with PCOD. She then put me on Diane-35 and Bigomet SR(metformin). The dose for metformin was 500mg once daily in the morning 15 mins before my breakfast. After that I came to London and went to see a gynae here. I told him all about my medications and that I wanted to have a baby. He did a smear test and a vaginal ultrasound on me. He then told me to stop Diane-35 and start having Metformin. The dose he gave me is 500 mg three times daily for 6 months. I still have not started having his prescription.
My questions are:
1) Will 500mg of Metformin 3 times daily help me get pregnant?(He told me that mine is not a classical case of PCOD)
2) Will this dose result in some serious side effects? (I have always been underweight and do not eat properly)
3) Does Metformin induce ovulation and help in reducing excess hair on the body?
4) What happens to the multiple cysts in my ovaries?Do they remain or die down?
My doctor has told me that if I do not get pregnant in these 6 months then he will put me Clomid and Metformin for another 6 months. Also shouldnt the doctor be doing any tests on me during the 6 months that I will be having Metformin?
I would really be thankful and relieved if someone provides some clarity on my questions?
