Hi All,
I am new to this forum. Thanks to Preeti, NItin and Ravi' s experiences I could get courage to have good machine cut in the bargershop. During the cut and after the cut it is a great feeling.

Hi Kiran,
I have completed 19 years of age this October i.e., 2010.Regarding Telugu, sorry Kiran, I learnt only few words \" Pettu\" , \" Cheyi\" , \" Venukulu\" \" Chinnage\" and \" cheskuntanu\" from friends like you My face is smooth and moustache and chin hair growth is less and is like a stuble and not at all thick. I visit saloon regulary once in a month. The barber moves freely my head after holding firmly. For razoring and machine cutting he will start from right, moves to back, left and to the front. He lifts my head and cuts the crop. Experience is really nice. After machine cut, he razors, removes the moustache and chin hairs on his own. Then he fine-tunes the cut with machine and scissors. Dusts the hairs with a brush. Then massages my head nicely.Applies powder to my face. Finally gives an appreciative look. I ensures that barber is comfortable. Many times the barber' s son who was my schoolmate give me the machine cut exactly like his father, but there would be more emotions involved and he hums Telugu songs. But, Kiran, I would like to know is really barber(s)are comfortable? Help me in which areas I need to improve.

If u r 19 means u r no longer a boy but a grown up man. So go for shaving. No more machine running on your face. Going by your description it is clear that your barber is very comfortable because you are comfortable with him. Otherwise he will tell you about his difficulty. I think only problem for you must be communication. To tell you the areas in which you need improvement, first you should tell your problem. Ok. Tell your problem. Then I will tell you how to overcome it.

Hi,
Thank you so very much for further insights and very practical tips. I shall follow them. Kiran, I have few more doubts regarding my barber' s comfort with me. He stands behind me for \" razoring\" the neck. But, never stops the cut after \" razoring\" he comfortably use scissors and machine for 6 to 10 more minutes. Another thing, on his own he removes moustache and chin hairs. He applies talcum powder to my face. After the cut he gaves me an appreciative look. Does his behaviour shows that is he really comfortable with me? Please answer so that any corrections from my side I can implement.

Hi Arun
Barber standing behind you for razoring is common practice. May be your barber is more comfortable in that position. But my barber always razors after keeping my face infront of him i.e firmly holds my head with one hand and applies lotion to ears then drags and bends my head and applies lotion at my back neck position. then he takes razors and shaves ears and back neck part very patiently for 5 to 10 minutes. during this 10 minutes my head and face will be seeing only my chest or his chest portion, seeing hair on cape at my lap, thyes or my cut hair particles which reaches his chest, hands etc. He, in the meantime without loosening the firm grip of his hand on my head proceeds with shaving. So i can hear only shaving razor sound.
Haircut is done in 2 phases. Phase Before razoring and after razoring. Before razoring he just cuts all the grown hair to short or very short very fast . But razoring gives a clear shape to your head. Then in the second phase he adjusts the hair by cutting it to appropriate size of razoring. This, he will do either with machine or scissors. until comb catches your hair he uses scissors only. The scissors used by some barbers are such sharp that it gives a feeling that machine has run on the head. If that kind of scissors are not available and the customers insists for some more short cut then he runs clippers.
Removing moustache and chin hair ( you mean beard?) on his own is because you are not stopping him from doing so. To answer this pl. tell me what is your age? If you are a grown up man, it seems you like clean shaven upper lips very much. So you are allowing him to do so. What is your age? If you are a teen ager of 15-17 naturally the moust and beard will not grow fully. For some growing boys it gives awkward look. The more you shave the most is the moustache and beard growth by the time the young boy becomes young man. Since you are his customer from your childhood he is taking liberty with your hair. Probably in your absence your father might have instructed the barber to remove because he (father) must have noticed the awkwardness in your just growing moust and beard. So till you become a grown up man u have no other go than to follow ur father’s likings. But ask your barber only to run machine on your growing moust and beard instead of shaving. Because shaving at an early age makes your moustache and beard very thick and face become rough in the lateral years. So if you ask him not to shave then he applies powder to your entire face and runs clippers which also gives a clean shave appearance. This is really enjoyable because vibrations on your face is really enjoyable. Appreciative look after cutting is out of affection because he must have known you from your childhood. Tell me your age so that I can give inputs to correct from your side. If you can understand telugu I can elaborate more points. Tell me are you comfortable with telugu or not?
All the best. reply soon

Hi,
Thanks again Kiran for great insights. I discussed with my father about your points. In addition, I had my machine cut on this Sunday where I insisted my barber to employ only the \" earlier razors\" . I found that sharpening the razor on a belt and the extra care like holding the head firmly that a barber takes while razoring is also important. In my saloon barbers apply dettoled water even with \" bladed razors\" .I agree the laziness in applying dettoled water around ears and at the back is another reason. Kiran, don' t you feel my points are also relevant?

Yes Arun
The more Sharpening the barber knife on a smooth stone or on a belt gives the most smoothness/shining after the shave. The sharpening sound on belt (satak satak satak) or on a stone (tsapak tsapak tsapak) is ear treat. The barbers used to apply grease or oil on the blades of clipper machine for smooth and speedy run and accurate cut of the machine. With regard to holding the head firmly while razoring plays an important role in cutting/tonsuring. For that we should make the barber to feel comfort with us. i.e. he should be allowed to feel free to dominate us by lifting and turning our head freely to all sides as per his convenience. Why I am saying this is some customers show bossism in saloon that is posing unnecessary show put up. Then the barber has no other option than to respect the customer. In such case he cannot freely do his work. Ultimately we will be the loosers in 3 ways i.e. loosing money, loosing good shape ofcourse loosing hair. My barber always dominates me while cutting. He tilts my head to all sides while cutting and after cutting he freely massages my head and body. To shave back neck and ears usually barbers stand behind us and pushes down the head to chest side but my barber stands infront of me and drags my head towards his chest and shaves back neck and ears which reminds me a father or elder brother’s affection. He nearly takes 5 to 10 mints to shave my back neck hair line giving a perfect shape. The results is my friends asks: is your barber usued a scale to shave your back neck? Usually many barbers ends the process after hairline shaving. But after neck shave my barber again takes scissors & comb or machine and cuts or runs for another 5 to 10 mints to give a army cut . He firmly holds my face at chin and combs perfectly before cutting my hair very short. With my face in his hand gives a feeling of comfort all the time. After the cutting he applies powder and dusts all the cut hair pieces with hands. Some usueful points at the time of visiting saloon for haircut.
1) Don’t wear tea shirts because hair particles struck to your T shirt giving itching/irritating sense because they are not easily dustable/removable.
2) Don’t go on Sundays/Holidays because of over rush he cannot devote and concentrate on you.
3) Wear a cut banian or no banian so that armpits can be shaved without much difficulty.
Some more tips and points in my next dispatch. more details shb underscore dyh at ycoin

Hi Kiran,
Thank you so very much and congradulations for the amazing insights. This will certainly help me to enjoy my machine cut still further. Kiran, will you educate me as to why the \" razor\" has changed and disposable blades came into being. My father narates how it was highly enjoyable to get \" razored\" after a neat machine cut with handheld machine and scissors and comb.

Hi arun
Knife razors are replaced by disposable blade razors for fear of AIDS spreading. Yes, what your father said is correct. after machine cut shaping the back neck line with a razor is enjoyble earlier but not now. The reason is definately not knife or blade razors. The actual reason is now a days most barbers (in hyderabad) are not applying any liquid at ears and back neck before razoring. After cutting they are straight way razoring causing itching pain because of razoring the dry hair(the sound will be KAR, KAR, KAR, KAR.) which is itching. Whereas if liquid is applied hair at back neck and ear side becomes wet and becomes easily removable (sound will be SAR, SAR, SAR,SAR(which feeling is heavenly. If you want an excellent short haircut/crew cut with fine razored back neck shape (either " U" shape or " BOX" like shape you should visit old barber shops only. The moden saloons will have only infrastructure and furniture but not good workmanship. What I mean to say is there is no difference between razors, but it lies in wetting the hair and craftfully cutting the hair. If inexperienced barber operates clipper machine on your head people will laugh at you where as if your head falls in the hands of an experienced barber who uses good tools people will love and appreciate your haircut. You are always welcome to clear your doubts. see me in

Hi Kumar and Other Friends,
With so much good experience in machine cuts with handheld machine, I still wonder why it is dicontinued. I understand from my father that in 1950s to late 1970s only handheld machines with \" cut throat razors\" (knife like) were used for haircuts. Don' t you feel this \" blade-culture\" is not environment friendly?

Hi Arun
First I congratulate u for having interest and enthusiasm in handheld machines. The handheld machines are now discontinued only in big saloons for want of time for customers because electric clippers will do the work just in 5 mins. where as it takes 15 mins for handheld machines. But handheld machines will give more vibrations and neat cut compared to machine ones. while using machines barber need not hold the head with one hand whereas in handmachines he has to hold head with one hand and adjusting the head according to the requirement for a neat and clean removal of hair. other reason is machines are made up of plastic or fibre where as handheld are with iron or steel. The square shaped metal containing the teeth blades that was connected by two handles touching the skin and moving from back neck to top slowly making clck cluck cluck sound gives good sound. But the same good sound is different when operated from ears to side tops to remove side locks and side hair is click click click (same sound heard differently at different places.Since you will not have this kind of square type big metal in electric you cannot enjoy the touching and vibrations while barber runs them. electric clippers removes all the hair in on go where as in hand machines it takes 3 to 4 trips to remove. so the vibration enjoyment is for long time. If the hair is oily one barber apply talk to silken it so that hair separates from skin smoothly and reaches the cape. blade culture is good for head shaving whereas handheld machines are good for crew cut /short haircut.

Hi,
Yes I had my machine cut on 26th July. Ravi would have his cut in two week from now.As usual I went to the saloon at 6.30 am which is about 2 kms from my house on my bicycle. Partked it outside. The barber put a white cloth on me and tightened the same. He sprayed liberally the water on my head. It was great feeling. Then he started his manual clippers first on my left side, then the back and then on the right side. I enjoyed the kit-kit sound. Since there was no one in the saloon, the barber scissored me much more perfectly. After 30 minutes the barber was happy with his work. Then he applied some dettol like smelling liquid and razored me around my ears and the neck line. Since I do not have hairs on my face and above the lips, he thought razor was needed. But I requested him to clean my face which he did happily. He commented that I look smart with a machine crop cut. I handed over the barber 25 rupees. While I was leaving two boys who came to the saloon gave me a look of appreciation. On the way back I met my classmate Kavita who stopped my bicycle and was enthusiatic to enquire about my cut and my feelings. In the house Ravi was very happy and as usual appreciated me and I gave me a hug. My parents and my uncle were very happy with the cut. in the college my maths and physics teachers patted my back and felt my machined area.

I keep getting mine hand machine cut last 15yrs and my wife likes it so much. I get a army cut which is zero sides and back and spiked top when its cut. I grow my hair for 3 months after every cut. I would want my wife to remind me for the cut and I get my cut very short as usual. My wife feels that is the best cut on me.

My barber starts right away with machine on sides and back and make it like a mushroo. Then he will wet my hair and do scissor cutting all over short. Again he will dust the sides and back, apply some powder and use machine to make it zero on sides and back which I like very much. Overall, my cuts take 45minutes and enjoy every bit in the chair.

I wish more and more enjoy the same

Hi Ajith,
Ajith, nothing to worry. In my case, when I had first machine cut 10 boys commented negatively, but I was firm and thoroughly enjoyed my cut. After my third machine cut, two of such boys had their machine cuts. I incidently appreciated and asked why they were negative. Their reply was they never meant anything negative. In fact they were proud of my looks with the machine cut. Perhaps negative appreciations are their way of appreciating me positively.
But, Ajith, you did not answer my questions - Did barber applied the dettol liquid before razoring? Did he razor around your ears? How was your feeling? It is my experience that proper razoring and cleaning up the face will add value to the looks of a boy after a machine cut.

Hi,
Discussed in detail with Ravi. There are four categories of people - first one they openly appreciate. In Ravi' s case five of his friends that include two of girl classmates always appreciate his machine cut. Two of the boys of this category were inspired by Ravi. Honestly, I am inspired by Ravi for my machine cut. Second category - they are silent but appreciate througy gestures and curious looks. Majority in Ravi' s case belong to this category. Third category - they will offer negative comments. But, Ravi feels and experienced that these negative comments were just to check his firmness and happiness about the cut. People of this category actually wants to have such machine cuts but they only want to check how happy Ravi is so that they can go for. Fourth categoy is indifferent. Negligible percentage of people belong to this category. Usually they are not sensitive to the feelings of a boy or a girl.

Hi Ajith,
In my case when I first underwent the machine cut, the barber on his own cleaned my face including a small moustache. He lavishly applied the dettol while razoring around my ear, sides and neckline. I really enjoy the razoring as much as the machine cut.
Did the barber applied the dettol? Did he cleaned up around your ears? How was your feeling?
