Waiting to try:Rubella vaccine before pregnancy.

Hello All,

I am 25 years old and married for the last five years. I now plan to have a baby and for the smae I have been browsing through lots of sites. I have found out that now it is extremely necessary for women to take the rubella vaccine. I want to know whether anyone else here has taken the vaccine. I am not sure what is to be done because I have been told that one must not get pregnant for three months after taking the vaccine. I have also heard that many times severe damage is caused to the foetus if the vaccine is not taken and the woman contracts rubella (German measles. Please help me here. I want to hear what are your views on the same. Is the vaccine necessary or not?

Hi Dee,

Yes, it is good to get the rubella vaccine before you get pregnant. In fact you could just visit a gynae and tell he you would like to get the routine tests as you are planning to get prgnant. She would be the best person to advise. If you have had measles earlier, it is possible that you are already immune to it - that is what happened in my case. In which case you don't need the vaccination. But if you haven't had it then get the vaccination as in case you should contract measles during your pregnancy, it could lead to birth defects in the baby like hearing loss etc. So better test it now.

Hello anam

Thank you for your advice. I have never had measles when I was a child though I have had chicken pox. One of my friends was trying hard to conceive. Her periods would always get delayed but her test would come up negative. On further testing it was found that she was positive for rubella. Yet she has been put on Ayurvedic medicine called 'Torchnil' instead of vaccine. She has been asked to wait for three months before trying again. I think I shall take the vaccine anyways. Many thanks once again.
