Waiting to try:Cervical Incompetence
2006-11-28
Name: Vaishali

I had a premature delivery in 26 weeks...the baby could not survive as it had not developed lungs. It was one year back and now once again I'm planning to conceive. But I'm very scared and skeptical. I'm not saying that I'm not positive but yes am scared.

My doctor has told me clearly that I've to stay in bed for 9 months if I want the baby to survive this time.

Have any of you heard or experienced this problem. Do you think there is some other solution to it? I mean I really dont know how can one be on bed rest for 9 long months...

Vaishali,
First of all change your Dr. because its not true that all patients with cervical incompetence will have to be in bed for all the pregnancy time.

I would even say that just a close monitor with frequent internal checkups will help you to decide what to do in new pregnancy. For instance if cervix is shorter than 3 cm then you may be checked once a week and if it continues to be shorter than 2.5 cm then stitches (cerclage) will be offered and they will be there until 34-36 weeks of gestation. At that time stitches will be removed and you will be sure that your baby is full term and healthy.

Of course like said by Divya's Dr. you will need to be careful while handling heavy duty work or strainuous activity.

I think you won't need to get that concerned I have seen cases who eneded up without cerclage and delivered full term healthy babies after a loss in second or third trimester.

Take things seriously but not as bad that they will affect your peace and process of ttc.

Thanx Archie for your comments. I did go to another doctor yesterday and she never said that I've to be on bed rest for 9 months. She just said that I've to be really careful in the first trimester and after 12 weeks a McDonalds Stitch will be required after which I'll be required to be on bed rest for 2 weeks. And then it totally depends on the development. She also told me not to be so scared.
Archie, I want another suggestion. I am working now, do you think I shold quit job as soon as I get to know that I've conceived? Or is it ok to work until 12 weeks? Because after that I' kow I'll not be allowed to work.
Once again thanks a ton for your opinions. It really means a lot to me.

I was also diagnosed for cervical incompetence last year when i miscarried in 16 weeks. The foetus was very small and i really dont know why. Doc says cervical incompetence. She said if I conceive again she will put a stitch on the cervix when I am 2 months pregnant and after a couple of months when the baby is developing fine, she will remove the stitches. But she too said I should be careful not to do any heavy job. I understand bed rest is really ridiculous... But what to do...we have to put up with everything.
I can totally understand how anxious you are about ur next pregnancy. I am undergoing the same trauma. Its been year and I am desperate to conceive now.
Good Luck to u !

Hey Divya,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I've recently joined this site and I can see the benefits already.

I'm a little less scared now and ready to plan.

All the best to you too! Do let me know.
