Due Date Club February 2006:For Archie re: anomaly scan

Hi Archie,

i just wanted to ask u a few questions, i did my anomaly scan on the 13th of this month, im now 21w6days today. The scan showed no structural abnormalities, and placenta was posterior clear of internal os. It also showed that i am having a baby girl!

there was only one measurement which was out of the normal which was Va/H which was 0.220, my consultant was not worried abt this, can u tell me what does that reading show?

Due to the blood pressure problem the sonographer done a Doppler Scan and found that there is bilateral uterine notching with increased resistance. the figures are as follows

L.Uterine Artery PI 2.59 RI 0.91
R.Uterine Artery PI 1.20 RI 0.63

I am currently on methyldopa blood pressure medicine and also on baby aspirin.

they now suggested that i need monthly doppler scans to check if the baby is growing well.

I am a little concerned, and just wanted ur opinion on this, do u know how to improve the problem. My consultant is not overly worried as she said that the baby has developed well and if in the next scan she is still growing normally then things look good. Obviously i need to keep my bp down and if i need to then she will increase my dose.

my consultant also suggested that i should have the baby before my due date of 19/2 she suggests any time after the 29/1 due to the bp problem and does not want to risk the babys health

Thank you for ur time and hope to hear from u soon

B

Dear B.
off reading of one aspect is not a problem. Your baby is growing pretty good to expected gestation and you should be very happy for this result.

yes due to increased resistance in blood supply you must follow up fetus development through frequent ultrasound to assure all is well.

your treatments are indeed appropriate and nothing can be suggested on that besides you should keep yourself tension free and happy to enjoy your pregnancy and keep your baby happy in your womb.

delivery ahead of time is not a concern as long as it's done after 36 weeks. If the situation does not improve you will be directed towards C-section room.I know I am giving bad hunch very early but won't keep you in dark, good to keep things open from this stage only.

Dear Archie,

thanks again for ur message, yes u are a grt person to talk to, which does make me relax.

i have to say that my bp has not exceeded 140/90 in the last 4wks it has been under this due to medication. its just been on late 70's and 80's which my consultant was worried about as it goes uo and down alot.

i have not looked for any other treatment for lowering BP i was just asking if u knew, the only thing i can do is yoga which is supposed to help so im going to start that and keeping weight down which my consultant was happy abt as ive gained abt 2pounds in the last 5wks.

i am however worried abt the baby's movement after my scan on thursday till sunday my baby was moving very regularly and i could feel the movements were getting stronger however yesterday and today its very less and more like flutters than actual punch and kicks is there anything to worry about im now 22w2d's. this has made me worry which is not good for the bp problem.

im trying to keep my bp down but as my mum had it in pregnancy looks like im doomed with it.

thanks archie your thoughts are grt.

B,
Consequences of increased resistance on blood flow can be many besides low weight birth.
It's important to keep track of fetal movements once you found a pattern. It will be always method to assure all is well or should you need to contact hospital.

No, I would not recommend herbal treatment when you are being treated allopathically, and you should not seek that advice from anybody. Because each method works in it's own way and combining two irrelevant methods can has cross contamination effects of two medications. I strongly urge to refrain from any home remedies or herbal methods search to find supplement or substitute to your BP treatment.

BP patients require more attention in their third trimest and you would not be escaping that care.

All I am suggesting, which is in your hand is to relax and forget about all blood pressure thing. Especially when you know your symptoms aggrevate in hospital or clinic which is due to your emotional status and you being afraid and scared of things.

A minimal resistance won't affect baby at all. Aspirin would help maintain blood flow and fall things in right manner.

I did not say you sure will have C-section but if the condition continues with reference to BP then C-section is very best option no matter how you feel about recovery. Not being shrewed or something that would be a choice in the best interest of you and fetus, both, but that's something you will have to decide during labor time and not today.

Please refrain from negative thoughts and worry on BP, it will only complicate rather than resolving. Try to relax and enjoy baby moves and look forward to hold your healthy little one. Low weight birth in itself is not a good consequence so keep relaxed and help your blood pressure so that your littleone won't be starving for anything.

talk to friends, relatives, members and me if that's make your feel OK.
Archie.

Dear Archie,

first thanks for ur reply. you said abt the increased resistance in blood supply, what is the implication of this? except low birth weight, im not sure what else can happen.

im hoping that the next scan goes well, is there any other type of treatment u know of to reduce blood pressure? what i mean is i will carry on my medication but sum herbal or any other technique?

im not too worried abt earlier delivery but im really hoping not to have a c-section but if it happens then there is nothing much i can do abt it. just have to look after myself.

thank u very much in advance for ur comments i do appreciate it.

best wishes B
