Breastfeeding:Going to be a mom soon...BreastPump question ?

Hi everybody...

I am expecting mom(Oct) and regular visitor of this website.I have got lot of questions answered on my board. But the question i have can be answered by moms already like you.
I am preparing my shopping list. I have a question about breatpump.
I work from home. But i think even after being at home having a breast pump would be helpful. I am so blank when it comes to breastpump information. There are so many available out there plus the cost also varies so much..i just do not want to make a mistake of buying a wrong one.
So please could you all tell me .
1. How many are using a breast pump? Especially moms who work from home ?
2. Which pump do you have ? is it working good for you.
3. If possible the cost.

i would really be thankful to you all...if i get good info it may be helpful to other friends on my October board. i guess even they must have started on thier list and worring about this.

Thanks in advance ....

I used the medela instype automatic pump. I got it from a friend and its pretty good. I started pumping after my baby was born did it for almost 12-13 months with no problem. The key is after u start working, pump regularly atleast after every 3-4 hrs to keep your supply.

I use the medela instyle and it works great for me. I am at home and express 4 times a day. FYI breast pumps are not returnable so do good research before you buy.

SK,

Sounds like you are based in the US. One suggestion would be to rent the pump from your hospital. I rented a Medela from the hospital for a month after which my supply was sufficient. After that I quit work so didn't need it. I just used a $15 hand operated one on few occasions. But I know people who rented from the hospital for upto 6 months.

If you are very serious about feeding for more atleast a year and continuing to work, then the expensive automated models (about $1000) are really worth it. The pumping action is much more comfortable than the smaller or hand operated ones.

Hope this helps! Ask if you need any more clarifications.

Hi,

Actually you only rent the pump/motor. All the tubing or anything that contains milk is brand new. Which is why I was confident about renting it. Once you see the actual unit you will understand what I mean.

Good luck!

hey thanks aarti...yes i am from california and yes i will be breastfeeding as long as it requires and advised.
So i am thinking of buying one. Plus i really do not like such personal thinks that are even been touched by unknown people.you must be getting what i mean.
Thank you for suggesting the breast pump.

The medela one I was talking about is called Pump In Style. It sells between $280 and 300 online. I wrote the price completely wrong. Wanted to mention that the range started from 100 and didn't realise what I typed. Sorry!

I'm not sure this is available everywhere, but I am using the Ameda electric pump. It is a double pump so you can pump both sides at once which will actually give you a greater amount of milk than just pumping one side at a time. The cost of this pump was $325 Canadian. The great part about this pump is that the tubing can be changed so if you needed to lend it to someone else or sell it, you can.

I was not breastfeed in my childhood hence the idea of sucking and feeding from a woman's full, engorged breasts has infatuated me.
