hI ALL,
i AM IN MY 29TH WEEK.THE OTHER DAY WHEN I WENT FOR MY DOCTORS APPOINTMENT SHE ASKED ME TO KEEP IN MIND MY BIRTHING PLAN AND INFORM HER IN THE NEXT VISIT.SHE ALSO ASKED ME IF I WOULD REQUEST FOR AN EPIDURAL FOR A PAINLESS DELIVERY.I HAVE HEARD MIXED OPINIONS ABOUT EPIDURAL.SOME SAY THAT IT HAS SIDE EFFECTS, IT CAN GIVE U PERMANENT BACKACHES.I DONT KNOW HOW PAINFUL THE NORMAL DELIVERY WOULD BE...SO I JUST WANTED TO FIND OUT IF ANY ONE OF U HAVE THOUGHT OF THIS OPTION.

Hi Kavitha, me
To answer your questions:
Re: how painful epidural placement will be, it's not bad. The anesthesiologist will give you local anesthetic at the site which will sting a little bit for a few seconds. After that what you mainly feel is some dull pressure in your back as the needle is being placed. If it's painful at all, you can always ask for more local. The needle is not in the bone, just in between the bones.
Me, if you have backache problems prior to pregnancy, unfortunately you're quite likely to continue having it afterwards. The important thing is that the epidural will likely not make any difference. Your backache may be worse soon after delivery because your ligaments get stretched during pregnancy and labor is not exactly very easy on your back.
Good luck!

As someone who has seen both sides (I'm an anesthesiologist who does epidurals) and have had one for my first kid, I would categorically say, there's no way I'm not going to have one for my second, due in Dec. About backaches, you are as likely to end up having one after what pregnancy and labor does to your body even if you don't have an epidural. And personally, I don't see any need to suffer a lot of pain if I have the choice of having a relatively pain-free and comfortable labor. I enjoyed my labor the lst time and want to do the same this time too! Hope this helps you.
Good luck!

nice to know there is an anesthesiologist on this board. this is my first pregnancy and am leaning towards taking an epidural. just wanted to know how painful is it to take an epidural ( since it is given in the bone) as compared to a reg injection. am scared of taking the epidural cause i think it might be quite painful. please do let me know. thanks & take care

Hi, I took epidural during my first kid and had no side effect. And this Dec. (for the second kid) I will SURELY be taking epidural. But like everyone says in this country - it is your decision. I took epidural and was sleeping during the 5 hrs of contractions that I had and then it was time to push! I had the same dilema the last time, but its all a matter of how comfortable you are with the faclility.

Hi Sheel,
You can drink water but after one day of your delivery and it would be said by doctors also. You have to take care at that moment because after delivery of baby you would have lot of pain.... - Roja [View Message]

Hi Sheel,
Why do you think in such way doctors would take care of you also.So it is better you do not take any tensions for that which would be better for you only.I hope you would do that.... - Megha [View Message]
