Due Date Club February 2008:Gestational Diabetes
2007-12-04
Name: Raji Siva

I had my First glucose test done on Nov 21st, it came 181, normal is 140 and below. So was asked to follow a diet and did the GTT on Friday. Hoping things would go normal, as I had done this for first one, it came normal. Dr office called and said I have the fasting value normal rest of them high, so I do have Gestational Diabetes and Dietician will call and fix appt and I have to go over from there. In fact I was following more good diet and more right gaining weight than last time, but looks like there is not specific reason for this. Both my mom and dad are diabetic, may be that plays a role, as well I am older now than first one, may be that.

Anyway, if someone has(I hope not) GD, please share your experience and let me know some good indian Veg food, which is more right. I am in midwest, so hoping here the Dr might say more of americanized food.

All the best for everyone.

Hi,
Rajisiva,
What i meant by 3 carbs is 1 serving is equal to 15gms of carbs. In that case one small phulka is 15 gms of carbs and rice 1/3 cup is 15 gms of serving.
2 vegs is 1/2 cup of any veg or salad two servings. 2 fats is 2 teaspoon of butter or ghee and 3 servings of protein is 21 gms of protein(since iam vegetraian) i take Beneprotein 3 scoop during lunch and dinner.
As far as rice is considered since iam allowed to take only 1/3 cup of rice so i thought better to have phulka.
After lunch and dinner i do 30 mins walk apart from my household work.
May be ur diet chart will be different, depends on sugar levels and body i believe.
So,take ur appointment as soon as possible.
Take care
Regards,
SK.

Hello SK,

Thanks for explaining the serving size. It makes sense. I will atleast try to start with some walk after every meal to get it going before my appt. I called them and left voicemail, waiting to be contacted eagerly. Sooner i start it is better.

Thanks for the help. All the best with your GD and the baby.

Best Wishes.
Raji

Hi Raji siva,
Iam from Jan board 33 weeks pregnant, diagnosed with GD in my 28th week,i live in Houston,TX.I went to a dietician she had prepared chart for me,which consists of 3 carbs,2 vegs,2 fats,3 proteins for lunch and dinner.
Rest snacks 1 carb,1 fat,1 protein respectively.
I have been taking pulkas since then with curry and no coconut in it.Since iam vegetarian she has asked me to take protein powder.
Daily iam taking blood glucose readings 4 times, testing for ketone in the morning.
As of now levels are in good control.
Let me know if u need more information about this and diet.
Be brave and fight with it everything will be alright.
Thanks and regards,
SK.

Hello SK,
Thanks for your kind words. I am waiting for the call/appt from dietician, planning to call tomorrow and fix it sooner than late. I have few questions for you:
1. What exactly meant by 3 carbs, 2 veg, 2 fats, 3 proteins, meaning the size, for examply 3 spoons of rice means 2 spoons of veg, something like that?
2. Do you take rice at all or eat pulkas(no oil chappathi) all the time?
3. Any exercise you do apart from following diet?

Yes I am trying my level best not to worry about it and hoping everything to go good. If you would like me to mail me separately, you can do that at rajeswaris in hotmail id.

Thanks again for your message and information.

Raji
