Due Date Club October 2003:Help..baby having ear infection
2004-11-22
Name: Nick

Hi
Ayush is having ear infection and this is the third time.I am worried and everytime the doctor suspects its from daycare.I prefer to heal in the natural way instead of giving antibiotics.
Any suggestions,advices will be appreciated.
He is also having a bad cough and mucous from the eye which the doctor suspects is due to ear infection.

The poor baby is not eating and has been crying all night.

Hi nick

Ear infections generally will go away in 3-4 days..if there is fever or last more than 4 days they will give antibiotics. Antibiotics are very very safe...more than over the counter medicines, so don't worry.
Yes, day care u r more exposed to outside weather and other kids having cold, so it will occur often..u can take care the most u can.
If cold, try to use saline drops and clear nose
Always feed milk with head held upright/reclined...never lying down.
Raise his head when he is asleep/ use humidifier.
U can give tylenol if he has fever.(0.8)
use sweet oil as ear drops (not when he has infection) but regularly to prevent wax buildup.( in india they use garlic oil warm which now here US researches say helps ear infections in babies.)
if he is in pain..just have some warm towel near the ear( read this not done it myself)
Do not feed banana/ yogurt when he has cold.

As i said in the earlier message, winter is a time when kids get cold often, there is an organic product xlear nasal wash, like a wash for nose , just clears bacteria which u can use twice a day or as often when he has cold..prevents cold as per other moms..u can research on it or order at xlear dot com.
Mucus in eye..i am not sure what it is..could be a pink eye (eye infection) which is not related to ear infection...but doc knows best.
He must be in pain so fussiness..try giving tylenol.
COugh..doc says is babies way of taking away phlegm...give warm liquids to soothe throat..or u can try dimetapp/tylenol cold./cough (please ask u doctor before u take any medicine).
Don't worry they will be fine..every kid/baby here gets ear infection...mainly due to weather/allergies, either in day care or in school later whenever kids are around.
If he is fussy , won't be long, for 1-2 days..and give him anythign he likes - glucose biscuits, milk, juice...as long as he eats.
scking is difficult with ear infection so try niplles shaped like breast nipples..helped anu when she was 7 months old..now I am more alert and aware when she has cold.
Ask day care folks to keep cleaning his nose, saline drops, so nose won't get blocked and may help prevent infection.
Try to do the best u can.
