Do you talk to your child about social issues and political conditions? How did your child react to Mumbai terror attack on 26th November 2008? What can be done to make children aware of the consequences of terror attack?

I have two teenage daughters. I encourage them to read newspapers as newspapers give authentic information. I also ask them to watch news channels. But I strictly tell them to watch good news channels that give facts. Sometimes while watching news channels we discuss on current political conditions and situations. I ask them questions and they answer me. Then they ask their queries and I try to solve them. My wife has done her degree in politics, so she understands it better than me. Helping children to cope with a terror attack is kind of challenging job.

Last time we all were terrified to hear about serial bombings at various railway stations. My husband’s office is in Andheri. Only I knew what I gone through to hear some rumors. But with god’s grace, he returned home healthy and hearty. It is painful to know that innocent people have to lose their lives in such terrorist acts. Terror strike in Bombay shocked everyone. Tourists who come in India to see India’s beauty never knew that they can also be the target of terrorist act in India. It is bad. Children are surely going to suffer. I read about a boy who lost his mom and dad in this attack. It saddened me. This little five year old boy is going face the consequences for all of his life.

According to me child’s age decide what we can discuss with him. I liked your guidelines and I would definitely try to find out what my child is feeling about all these terror attack that happened in Mumbai. I am a working mother but I try my level best find some time to spend with my kid. Terror strike at Mumbai makes me feel insecure. We often visit south Mumbai for recreation purpose. What would have happened, if I had been there? I feel sorry for those innocent people who suffered because of terrorists. I am thinking of talking with my child about all such incidences on the weekends. Children should know about terrorism. It will make them aware of some crucial facts.
