Name: Preeti Recall my thread dated 2009-03-29 (Change in my boycut plan). Last Saturday, we were all in Tirumala. And all of us - my fil, mil, husband, myself, daughter Ramya and the two sons - got tonsured again clean bald at Kalyanakatta. All of us are happy and going around bald. In my bank also I am going around without any covering and everybody has learnt to take it in their stride since last year also I did the same. My mil is also happy. She had the longest hair of all of us - about 6 inches. She had not cut her hair since her ' gundu' last year.
The sad part is there is no haircut for me or Ramya for the next four years!

U may post like this in the coming months also.

In orthodox brahmin family ladies will not put any headshave.

Nowadays ladies are making haircut.

ladies make short hair cut. But u r different. U like only crew cut like army cut. Very nice. But the loser is the barber his income may lose for four years. recession for him.
I thank ur hubby also for his encouragement.
We have to wait for another four years for yr experience.

One of our relative lady working put headshave at tirupathi.
I have asked she told i have a vow why should i bother to my father and mother in law.My hair i am offereing to lord. Very very courage lady.

andra Family pople make headshave once in their life time in tirupathi. In tamilnaadu most of the brahmin orthodox and ladies not make any headsahve. Please tell me about venidah mentioned in your message. i dont know. want to know the same. thanks and regrds.

Venidaan

Dear Sarathy,
I also did not know about till about last July. Having seen our ´ Tirupati gundu´ , a distant relative - an elderly man - commented on Venidaan at Prayag. Thereafter my in-laws studied more about it and by March this year my mil was convinced that she had missed out on this. So she decided to grow hair and do it and advised me the same. After having read the relevant things in the scripture I also thought ´ why not?´ Hence this four year hair growth plan. I have explained what venidaan is to the extent I know.

â€˜prayAga mAhAtmyamâ€™ is a part of â€˜padma purANaâ€™ one of the 18 purANas. It extols about the â€˜trivENi saMgamaâ€™ in Prayan (currently named as Allahabad in UP). Among the various rites at Prayag which it extols, â€˜muNDanaâ€™ (head tonsuring) is one. Another is the â€˜vENidAnâ€™.

â€˜muNDanaâ€™

It says that â€˜muNDanaâ€™ in prayAga is a highly acclaimed rite and EVERYONE should do it on his/her first visit to the place. Men should do it every time they go their on pilgrimage and women need not do it on subsequent visits. Full tonsure is recommended for everyone though suhag women (women whose husbands are alive) can optionally cut a few finger lengths of their braid and offer it to the sacred river confluence. Even women who are pregnant, women with live husbands, widows, young unmarried girls â€“ all should undergo mundane here. â€˜muNDanâ€™ at prayAg is considered a beautiful thing to do (â€˜muNDanM maNDanaM yatra prayAgE thIrthanAyakEâ€™ for anybody incuding women. There are a number of shlokas in this regard in the book. I have quoted a few here.

â€˜bAlO vAtha yuvA vApi vRuddhO vA strI sabhartRukA |
garbhiNI patihInA vA prayAgE vapanAcCuciH ||â€™
(Be it a boy or a youth or an old man, be it a woman with live husband, be it a pregnant lady or a widow, they all become pure because of tonsure at Prayag).

â€˜ajAnacaulO bAlO$pi brahmacArI kumArikA |
jIvatpitApi kurvIta vapanaM thIrthanAyakE ||â€™
(Be it a boy whose first tonsure â€“ chaula â€“ is not done, be it unmarried man or an unmarried girl, be it a man with live father, they all should get tonsured at Prayag â€“ the king of thirthas.)

â€˜vENIdAnaâ€™

â€˜vENIdAnaâ€™ is a rite to be undertaken by suhAg women only once in their life time on the banks of the Triveni Sangama in Prayag. The husband has to be there with her. The two have to bathe and wear new clothes. The husband combs and braids the hair of his wife, and decorates it with flowers. Then with new scissors or a knife he shears off a predetermined length of the bottom portion of the braid. The couple initially decide what length he is going to cut. It may vary from a few finger breadths to upto the hair roots. He places this sheared hair in the wifeâ€™s hands. She does pooja to the sheared hair, and with suitable mantras offers the hair to the holy river. Afterwards, she can go for full â€˜muNDanâ€™ if she and her husband so wish.

[Savitri (a godly woman), first did Venidaan by slicing three finger breadths of her decorated hair with a knife.]

(Thereafter, with the permission of her husband, got her head shaved to the roots)

One mam asked about barbers shave also
u have replied weell. Generally they ave having good experience they will shave fast. In case if shake our head it will make some scratches with blade or otherwise it will be ok.

No crew cut for now

Thanks Sarathy for the encouraging words.
Our heads were smooth on Saturday and sandpapery till about Tuesday. By now it is like velvet.
You have asked whether I am going for crew cut again. Yes, but not immediately. For another four years, neither I nor my mil nor my daughter will cut our hair except for a small snip at our henceforth annual Tirumala visit. After 4 years we will visit Prayag for Venidaan (my mil and myself). There we will tonsure after Venidaan. Thenafter only, I may revert to crew cut.

Great experience!

Generally the experience is similar to last year. Last year I was a bit anxious as it was the first time. But this time all of us were joyously anticipating the tonsures. Since the hair lengths of all were very small (except my mil who had about 6 inch long hairs) it took the barbers less time to wet it and easier to shave off. We were distributed among three queues - fil and one of my sons in one queue, hubby, daughter and the other son in the second queue, myself and mil in the third. Everyone was joyous in getting transformed into a gray ´ gundu´ .
In the bank, giggles were there as expected both from colleagues and customers but I am really enjoying the exposure, occasional caress on the bald head from a colleague or a friend.
All I can say is that the tonsure experience, the look and feel of the tonsured head and the whole family of bald heads sitting together for dinner - all are really great!

The reaction in my bank was hilarious. Mostly giggles but they all expected it. Some (of course, females only) did caress my head with a smile.

No Sujatha. The barbers are not rash but are probably the fastest in the world in tonsuring. They are fast because they have immense experience, they thoroughly wet the hair and use a fresh blade. They know that they are doing a job very pious for the tonsured hence do it with lot of reverence and care. No need to be afraid. Only do not shake your head but allow it to be turned the way he wants (in case you decide to shave your head). It is an extremely joyous experience if you have submitted willingly to it.

efficient barbers

Yes, barbers at tirupati shave very fast but not rashly. As they posses years of experience in this work, they do it very fast and with skilled talent. Others who watch standing behind the person who is being shaved get this kind of feeling. But the person who is getting the shave really enjoys the tonsure. It´ s great to feel the hairs getting separated from the head physically and falling infront and in to the lap.

Yes barbers come to cottages on payment. (Not to all the cottages. only few cottages have this facility. But in almost every cottage complex there is a special room for tonsuring. i.e. you need not have to go to kalyanakatta for this purpose.
