Routine Tests:thyroide problem

I got my TSH level tested in 5th month of pregnancy and it came to 4.52. My Doctor has prescribed 2.5 mg of thyroxine daily although I have no other thyroid symtoms. Meanswhile I came to know that it is normal to increase the TSH level during pregnancy and it is not safe to take thyroid medicine. I am not taking thyroxine and waiting for an expert advice. Is it true that nominal increase in TSH level can effect the brain development of baby? Please respond soon. I am worried. Reply now

Rubi,
TSH levels below 5 are usually not regarded as Hypothyroid. Those who have had no thyroid concern in first trimester can remain un-noticed of increased TSH during pregnancy and may not be of a huge concern on brain development of baby.

Also if your prescription is Levo-thyroxin then 2.5 mg per day is way large dose. I would suggest you to have word with your OB and if possible with an endocrinologist before taking or choosing to take levo-thyroxin.

If tSH levels are above 5 then you would be asked to take small dose such as 25-75 micrograms perday not in miligrams which is 100 to 1000 times in excess.

If one is hypothyroid during ttc period then she must take not only levo-thyroxin but also to increase dose during pregnancy as it demands and will require to take it for the rest of life because hypothyroidism in itself will have other consequences on ones body, could lead to Hashimoto's disease, weight gain, arthralgia and also bone density problems. I am not scaring you but making you aware in case you end up with this. I think you are not thyroid patient only requires a final confirmation from professionals.

Thanks for your response. Here I like to mention that I was never hypothyroid. my TSH level increased a little bit during pregnancy only. And Some body has told me that if I initiate thyroid medication, I would become dependent on it and I have to take it through out my life.
