hi
actually we did this ceremony as as a custom, hence it was mandatory for the boy to wear anklets, bangles earrings etc.though this is viewed as feminine,in the past all people wore such jewellery.

That´ s really good that you have done the ceremony as a custom. Its good that the ears are pierced as it improves some of the traits in us. Also it looks cute for a small boy wearing ear rings. Please do encourage your child to wear the rings in both the ears & not go beyond the fashion of wearing a single one.

hi guys the tonsure ceremony on my son is complete,i wanted to share my

experince with you all.

let me start with the purchase of the jewellery.my mother my

daughter, akash and me went to GRT in T NAGAR.there in the baby section

we foung the studs boring, hence we went to the ear drops section and

bought a gimmiki(somewhat long).it looked really cute(atleast thats

what we thought).then we bought a pair of bangles, ankles for him ,as

our custom includes this(i do not know why the hell!!).
as my hubby went on atour(i think purposely),i had to call my mother.we

went to palani by bus.the bus which was supposed to arrive at 4 pm

arrived at 7!!.we found a lodge and slept(next morning we had to get up

early).the next day we were ready to leave at 5 30am.we climbed the

hill along with others(we ven did not have our breakfast).the going was

slow(i could wear only a chuddi). on reaching there the temple,we

easily located the tonsure centre.the tonsure centre for ladies was

empty,so we went there,a couple of women sitting there told it was not

a problem.they showed us the shower area as well(as the boy has to be

bathed after his head is tonsured).then we had to remove clothes(as

they told the hair would fall on it).we made him sit on his

sister.srinidhi was reluctant at first, but then the going was fine.the

barber woman, applied water to his hair and massaged it.then she told

srinidhi to bend his head.then she separated his hair into two and

started shaving his hair.after the rightside was shaved she proceeded

to the left.also we had told her to keep a top knot,or kudumi.then i

took him to the shower and bathed him, then only i realized we did not

bring new set of clothes for him.thus he had to be without any clothes

during the rest of the ceremony(he was just 5 yr old boy)then we

applied sandle paste to his bald head and oil to his top knot
then the ear piercing.again we made him sit on srinidhi' s lap.the women

who was there applied a gel to his lobes, andd then carefully pierced

his lobes using a heated needle, poor akash started crying, after

pacifying him,the other ear was pierced, then the earrings were

inserted.he looked cute and gorgeous.then came the bangle and

anklets.he looked like a girl(haha).after sometime and after a toy,he

stopped crying.we worshipped lord Muruga, and we returned to the lodge.
the sound of his anklets jingling drew a lot of attention.the next day

we returned.at school also the girls didnt tease him,and accepted him

as he was.now,we plan to remove his earrings(which includes other

things),after 3 yrs,so there will be another tonsure at that time.i

find these ceremonies really funny ,because my son wera shirt and a

trouser and also earrings and other girlish stuff,so pl comment

Dear Aditi,
Actually as per Hindu traditions (you can look into works such as Manusmriti) earpiercing should be done in the first year while tonsuring is to be done in the first or third year. Doing it in fifth year, though acceptable, is a bit late. And both tonsuring and earpiercing is to be done for both boys and girls. Earpiercing and wearing small gold ornaments there will improve some of the traits. Though I do not know how, I believe in this. Similarly putting silver anklets and bangles will add weight to the limbs at the same time giving some beauty. The additional weight at that age makes the limb movement a bit more measured and hence proper.
As for tonsuring, it is highly beneficial. Physically it removes the birth hair, exposes the scalp skin to tender sun light making it strong and healthy, prevents growth of lice and knits at an early age. Spiritually it is supposed to remove or at least reduce the bad influence of previous birth. And personally I find tonsured kids (above 3 years of course) extremely cute and attractive, be they boys or girls.
A small amount of crying by the babies for piercing or tonsuring should be tolerated for their own well being.
In fact, delaying of your son´ s tonsure and ear-piercing could have been done much earlier.
And now-a-days in the cities another fad is growing. That is wearing an ear piece by boys and men in only one ear. It looks extremely ugly. I hope you will encourage your son after he grows up to keep the ear studs in both ears.
Of course, a single nose stud on women looks better than double nose studs. But that is a different matter.

Hi,

Felt a bit sad that the child had to undergo the procedure of tonsure at the age of 5 and he started crying when the ears were pierced. But I never think that its not worthless deed as piercing one´ s ears has got its own importance. That´ s the reason why all the people irrespective of sex got their ears pierced in olden times. Its good for their health and its said that it improves our memory etc. But I don´ t know what´ s the need to make him wear anklets and bangles.

Good that it was done at early stage of 5, as he would not feel much ashamed to stand like a girl. Did you remove the ear rings?

Hello everyone,
I have medium volume hair but my hair type is very thin and silky. Due to which my hair doesn't hold curls for long hours. I have heard that texturizing spray helps to solve the above problem. Could someone please suggest the good texturizing spray for thin hair?... - Amulya Peru [View Message]
