Due Date Club October 2003:Night feedings

Hi all,
I have a query. Anuraag keeps getting up int he night at least 2-3 times. and he needs to be fed. I try patting, singing but to no avail. Nothing can stop his wailing other than milk. I have heard that you should stop feedings at night. But i can't seem to help.

Do any of your babies need feedings even now? Any tips for me as to how i should break this habit?

thanks
aarti

Hi
Aarthi
Even i am in the same boat as Ayush wakes up 2-3 times to breastfeed.I think its because of habit.I am also trying to stop it.

Shall try Radhika's suggestion.

Hi aarti..

Will try to help with the little experience I have..though u can talk and get a suggestion from doc.
Firstly if its been a habit of him waking up for feedings, then it will take a lot of patience to ge thim out of it..try reducing from 3 to 2 and then 1..how? think like u r doing now..keep trying to think of feeding as last option, try rocking, walking and rocking, singing or if pacifier helps..great. have u tried giving formula instead..i know its difficult to make some at night, but keep it ready have a thermos of water and make it instant. then once breast feeding habit is out, slowly try to get rid of bottle..it will take time.
OTher things i would check for is
1) is he getting up becoz of hunger or just habit..if its hunger, add a little more solid to his last solid feed.
2) Is he feeling warm, bed not comfortable, is he scared to be in the crib?, if in same room i would try a few days letting him sleep with u for some time till he dozes off and then slowly transferring as days go on and he gets comfortable.
3) Check if he is sick..tummy upset/cold/ear infection..if u think he is fussy because of some food, etc.
Other than that..all i can say is u may have to up at nights and be patient and try to keep him off the breast for some time and if its too bad give in..try to find alternatives for him to suck on.
Babies love routines..trying to change them means u have to be consistent every night..so all the best.
Hope this helps..though i am not sure if right since i haven't faced this prob. Anu doesn't nap during the day and is dead tired by nighttime. Does wake up at times..but its either when she knows i am not in the room or its too hot.took time to figure out for me too why she did get up if she did. so all the best
Radhika

Hi Nick & Radhika,

Thanks for your prompt replies. Radhika, your tips seem to be workable. Lets see, what the results are.

I'll start them from today itself.
Thanks once again.
