Hello,

I saw your reply to one of the query on very short haircut on men i.e. crewcut. I am 26 and I want to try once clipper cut. Is your husband maintaining this haircut for a long time now? if he is old enough then it wouldn' t matter much . If he is in his 30' s then definitely lot of comments will come. I am just worried what my girlfriend and others would say. I like that haircut and am thinking of asking the barber this time this haircut. I hope the barber can give me this cut with scissors and how high it should be at the sides, back etc.

To Shankar.
Sorry for delayed answer. My husband is around 30 now and he is maintaining this crewcut for the past two and half years. All of us - his parents, himself, myself, our two kids - and his close friends have got used to his clippered sides and back style. And for me it looks very nice on him. One need not be old to look good with such a cut.
Whether you gf likes it or not, you should ask her, not me.
You can definitely try a clipper cut if you like it. These are minor issues on which you should not lose too much time. If it does not work out well, hair grows back and for men it is just a matter of a month or so. And I do recommend clipper cuts for men. It feels so great! And if the shape of the head is right, it also looks great.
You have made a contradictory statement - you want clipper cut but you want barber to do it with scissors. Nope. Best to get it done with clippers - manual or electric.
For a really good look (in my view) the clippered portions should be about one and half inch above top of ear and it should be clipped bald. The top should be about half to three fourths of an inch with proper gradation to the clippered sides and back.
Since the change will be drastic, many people - men and women - will stare, giggle, etc. at your look. If you have the guts to take them in a positive sense, then go ahead and enjoy a clipper cut.
Wishing you a happy crew cut with clippers.

I think may be I didn´ t convey it properly. I indeed enjoyed very much my haircut since I wanted to try it for once. Ofcourse, I knew that my gf may not like it. Indeed it was a surprise to me from your message that there are people who like such cuts. I am planning to get this cut definitely during summer. The comments that I have got so far is not so encouraging. I also got embarassed as a girl whom I knew saw me when the barber was running the manual clippers on the sides. gigles on her face :-)

Dear Shankar
From your answer it appears you are not happy with your cut. Well, tough luck that you gf did not approve. Two more months, you can return to a normal hair cut.
You have asked why my husband got the cut and all that. Well, I always had a thing for short and very short hair on men since my college days. After marriage I used to mention once in a while, half in jest and half in seriousnes, to my husband that he could try a crew cut once. One fine day he returned with such a cut giving me a pleasant surprise. As I mentioned in my letter to Sanjana (17-6-2008) it really looked great on him. So I told him that I loved it and he could keep it if he also liked it. He told me that sensation of getting a clipper cut is really great and he would keep it if I liked the looks. I said I liked both the looks and the feel of his clippered sides and back, even the feel of the small hair on the top. Since then he is keeping it and we both like it and love it. In fact I am proud to move around with him with a fresh crew cut on him (he gets is cut once in 4 or 5 weeks).
I hope I have answered your questions, Shankar.

Dear Kumudam Madam,

Answering your questions: Initially, the barber reduced the back and sides using scissors. Once he was sure, he could use manual clippers, he started using them on the sides and back. Definitely it´ s a different experience when one gets a manual clipper cut. He first clipped bald on the back, he came to sides and clipped bald. It´ s a great experience. Having said that, when he finally finished, I saw a new me in the mirror , no hair at the sides and back. One comment he told is that if one gets used to this type of cut, even if the hair grows to medium length, they would want to clipper it. And finally, the obvious thing, my gf is not happy. Weren´ t you takenaback when your husband came one day with such a clipper cut ? why he went for this cut and why he maintains it ?

Dear Shankar
I am happy to know that you have got a crew cut done. Forget about the onlooker effect. Onlookers will always be there for anything out of the way you do. Just ignore them.
It would be nice if you answer the following.
Did you enjoy the sensation of clipper cut? My husband says it is a highly enjoyable sensation if done properly.
Are you happy with your new look of bald sides and back and short top?
Is your gf happy or angry or neutral with your new look?

Dear Kumuda madam,

Thanks for the reply. After much thought, finally I got the cut that I wanted. I didn´ t go to a fancy shop but to a old shop (that had no doors). I told the barber to give a very short haircut and sides and back reduced by manual clippers. He did a very good job. My sides and back were bald after he ran the clippers and then he scissored the top half to less than half an inch. He was asking me if it was enough, I asked to clipper it high on back and sides. On the flip side, passers by were curious to see me getting the haircut by clippers as the shop had no doors.

Dear Shankar
No. My husband did not wear a cap when he first went for the clipper cut. Yes, as I said his colleagues did make fun of him for a while. But he took it in his stride and when he got the same cut a month later, nobody seemed to object. Now, as I said in my earlier letter, everyone is used to his style of clippered sides and back.
You are thinking of surprising your gf. But be ready for her to ditch you if she hates it. Surprises do not lead to enjoyment always. Anticipation may lead to better enjoyment many times.
Anyway, go ahead and have your manual clipper cut.

Thank you for your reply. I haven´ t talked to my girlfriend nor I am planning to. I may surpirse her. I thought cutting it through scissors will be enough but after the reply, I discused this casually with one of my close friend and he suggested to go for manual clippers and not an electric one. I haven´ t yet decided ..
If I get cut, may be I may wear a cap for a week or so :-)From the reply, it seems sides should be cut high and back may be will leave it to the barber. Ironically, there should be a shop that uses manual clippers as well... I don´ know yet..

your husband is able to maintain this cut because of your support. There could be reason that made him to change his hairstyle to this cut. Did he ever wear a cap after this cut ? His real challenge would have been to going to his office after the cut - lot of comments, etc.

Hello everyone,
I have medium volume hair but my hair type is very thin and silky. Due to which my hair doesn't hold curls for long hours. I have heard that texturizing spray helps to solve the above problem. Could someone please suggest the good texturizing spray for thin hair?... - Amulya Peru [View Message]
