Due Date Club September 2007:Back pain
2007-04-06
Name: mou

Hi all!
I am 16.1 wk pregnant.I have this pain in my left part of lower back, seems to be in between pelvic bone and spine. It is hurting mainly when i try to change my position (e.g start to walk or try to stand after sitting- mainly during any movemnets). And sometimes i feel pain in the left lower abdomen right opposite of the back pain.
Is it anything to do with my sleeping position? Mostly i try to sleep on my left side but soon return on my back( for a while).
I am really worried, and want to know if anybody else have the same prob.
Take care.
Love all.
mou.

i was reading a book this morning.. on pregnancy... and i too have this lower back pain.. esp evident while turning over in bed. i' ll quote from the book.
the name of the book is \" birth and beyond\" by Dr. Yehudi Gordon.

\" As the weeks pass, backache becomes very common and there are thousands of pregnant women who sympathise with you. The hormonal and joint changes of pregnancy cause the pain, and the way you sit, walk and sleep can make it worse. Emotional stress can also affect it.\"
from further on..

\" About half of all pregnant women get low back pain. it can usually be addressed and relieved with simple attention to posture, exercise and relaxation.\"

okk.. there' s a lot more.. and it' s quite long.. i' ll try and summarise it for you...

okk....
action plan:
best discuss with your midwife or doctor if it is severe or there are other symptoms. for instance if the pain is associated with a loss of sensation or tingling in the thighs or feet or muscle weakness, a prolapsed invertebral disc may be considered.

what you can do:
Be aware of your posture.
a warm bath or a hot water bottle for lower back ache and/or a massage.

lying on your back with your feet propped app. 60 cm above your hips on a cushion or low chair for about 20 mins, 4 times a day.
exercise and yoga.

try not to get downhearted. if you have back pain in pregnancy this won' t necessarily make labour harder, and if your pelvic joints have opened wide this could mean that the labour is in fact easier.

{ok.. it mentions earlier on.. that in pregnancy the pelvic joints soften and one of the joints widens throughout pregnancy from it' s normal width of 5mm to a max of 12 mm. As it widens the pubic and sacroiliac joints move excessively and can cause discomfort}

also.. the lower abdomen pain you describe is lumbar pain which stems from the joints between the vertebrae, the surrounding muscles or ligaments or nerves that run from the lumbar spine into the lower abdomen and legs!

okk.. i think that should help you.
and BTW my doc said regular walking helps alleviate the pain... i find that to be the bast solution.

hope that helps!
and take care... and don' t worry overmuch about it...
love
ira
