Fish containing DHA is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acid for mother
The term docosahexaenoic acid{DHA} may seem innocuous enough but this particular polysaturated fatty acid is gaining a stellar role in ‘mother and child’ nutrition.
Emerging research shows that expectant mothers who receive sufficient amounts of DHA during pregnancy have smarter babies. It is not as if DHA has suddenly become a prerequisite , points out kamini rao, gynaecologist.â€the richest sourse of DHA is omega-3 fatty acids, contained mostly in cold-water fish such as mackerel, sardine, hilsa and salmon.but fish is not a staple for all Indians.of courcse motheres-to-be can ingest it in a capsule form. But vegetarians will not do so.now ,gynaecologists are also saying that fortified drinks can also provide DHA†rao explained.
A DHA supplemented diet according to doctors,†significantlyâ€improves eye-hand coordination, increases the ‘mental development index’ of the infant ,improves visual acuity {as DHA attaches to the outer layers of the retina}and more importantly, reduces the occurrence of pre-term delivery ,improves birth weight and helps reduce “post delivery depression in young mothersâ€
DHA is said to be concentrated in the neurons and synapses of the brain, ensuring optimal function of brain cell membranes.
So, ant deficiency can lead to deficits in brain function.
Also, low levels of DHA have been correlated to dementia, depression, memory loss and visual problems.
Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids: oily cold water fish, eggs, leafy vegetables, pumpkin seeds, soy beans, kidney beans.
