Due Date Club February 2008:baby list

Hi Moms,

Not sure if this applies to moms who are in India but this list should be very helpful for US moms for first couple of weeks (6weeks):
Also, I am planning on start shopping from now on as my body is not allowing me to shop for long hrs and NJ weather too. Just want to finish and be ready:

Here is the list: (not in order)
1. Diapers (new born)
2. Wipes (wet wipes without scent are prefered)
3. Bottles (some with open bottom)
4. Plastic liners for milk bottles (this is for open bottom bottle. you can just throw away the liner and put another one. easy for travel and also when you don' t have boiled bottle ready)
5. Moisturizing cream (as baby is born in winter, u need this)
6. Baby blanket
7. Baby dress (home coming and couple more for regular daily wear/one piece dresses)
8. Diaper rash cream (Dustin)
9. Baby soap/shampoo/baby lotion
10. Formula
11. Bath tub (u can put this in kitchen sink and use for baby)
12. Car seat (need this to come home from hospital)
13. Bassinet (depends)
14. Mittens (so baby' s don' t hurt themselves with their small nails)
15. Rocking Chair (very useful to rock them to sleep)
16. Rubbing alcohol (for their belly button)
17. Cotton swabs (to apply rubbing alcohol)
18. Bulb nasal aspirator (will be useful if baby has sever cold)
19. Pacifier ( for soothing)
20. Baby tylenol
21. Mylicon drops/little tummies ( for gas relief)
22. Diaper changing pad
23. Baby Nail cutter
24. Thermometer

This is what I have so far. If I missed anything, feel free to add.
Later in months we can talk about list of things for overnight bag/hospital bag that we should take when we go for delivery.

Hi Aparna

Thanks for the list. Its very helpful. I have a few question' s about the baby bottles.I have seen the avent bottles (or nipples to be precise)come in different types like soft flow, medium and fast. which is suitable for newborns or does it vary from baby to bay.

secondly is it safer to boil (to sterilize) the bottle in water (the traditional way) or can we use the microwave or electronic sterilizer also.

also i am very much confused about wether to invest in a breast pump right now or wait and try breast feeding and see how it goes. i will not be working after delivery, but i have seen many of my friends who have had trouble breastfeeding due to various reasons and had to pump. so shud i buy it beforehand or wait and see how it goes.

sorry to bombard you with so many questions, but since u have experience you can advice on this.

thanks

Hi Mamta,

Lets see if I can answer your questions. About bottles and nipples, soft flow is the one that you use for new borns. Others will be a little faster (they are not ready yet). As the baby starts growing, you need to change the nipples (0-3,3-6 months etc).
About boiling the bottles, I don´ t think they are microwave safe. I always used our stove (regular way). But be careful, you don´ t want to boil them too long or burn them.
Breast pump, they are costly. For my son, I breast fed and gave him bottle too. (As he had jaundice after birth, my doc asked me to give him bottle also) I was glad as he was able to latch properly and didn´ t have to use breast pump.
My advice would be: try breast feeding first. Even if there is any difficulty, you can take advice from nurses during the hospital stay. If it gets really difficult, you can go for breast pump. Just make sure your h´ band knows where to go to find/buy breast pump. Shop around and show him which one you might like (price/model etc), just in case he has to run to shop after the baby.

Hope this helps. Don´ t worry, you will do fine :)
