Due Date Club September 2007:sleeping position after 4th month

hi all,
most of us are going to complete our 4th month. my 4th month will be completing this friday. now it is very necessary to know the right sleeping position due to avoid backache which is very common in pregnancy.
if u sleep on ur back after 4th month, u put the entire weight of uterus on ur back, intestines and the vains responsible for returning blood from the lower body to the heart. this can aggravate backaches and hemorrhoids, inhibit digestive function, interfere with breathing and circulation and possibly cause hypotension or low blood pressure.
sleeping on ur side - preferably the left side - with one leg crossed over the other and with a pillow between them, is best for both u and ur baby. it allows maximum blood flow and nutrients to the placenta, enhances efficient kidney function and reduce swelling of ankles, feet and hands.
also avoid any exercise on ur back after 4th month.
i know it is really traumatic to leave ur favourite sleeping position. i used 2 sleep on my tummy before pregnancy. after i got 2 know abt my pregnancy i started sleeping on my back and for last 15 days i m trying to sleep on my left side. and believe me gals i m still trying and not able to sleep properly in the night. hope ill adjust with the new position soon.
would like to know abt ur sleeping experience.
happy sleeping

that is something i think is natural.... i read that your sleep will become more and more lighter as your pregnancy advances.. natures way of making sure you wake up when ur baby cries later on.
the back pain.. i told my GP about it, and all she said was you need to swim or walk to keep that in check, it is a common symptom.
also check your mattress.. i used to have a lot of back pain, the mattress on our bed was tooo springy, so i took to putting a thin mattress on the floor and sleeping, that helped my back pain... though i don' t sleep on it everyday.... i keep it as an option... helps a lot.
ira replied. Hi Barish!
i am with you on the tummy sleeper thing! i was myself a tummy sleeper.... since i found out i am pregnant.. i have been consciously trying to sleep on my side... though now i still cannot exclusively sleep on the left side... i keep changing sides... but yes.. atleast i have got out of the habit of sleeping on my tummy or back.
thing is... it helps a lot if you place one pillow behind your back, that prevents you from completely sleeping on your back, and this position i believe is safe enough.and one pillow between your knees..
there are some special pregnancy snoozer pillows available too....
and you could also consider body pillows...
though personally i am comfortable using 3 pillows.. one under the head, one between knees and one behind.
though.. i can' t wait to go back to my tummy sleeping :-)
love

Right now I' m in my 14th week,so I' m finding it lil easier to sleep on my back.It was tuff initially coz I was sleeping on my tummy before pregnancy.Evn till the start of second month I was,but later my hubby used to wake me up n remind me 2 sleep on back, then we didnt know wus the rite position to sleep. But sumwhere in the 3 rd month, ira had written in the posts that we shd sleep on left side(Thanks Ira),so after that tried sleeping on the left side.So kinda got used to that also..But Inbetween I used to sleep on my back too,so 4m there on I switched to my back.Anyways now as the tummy is growing it wud be best 2 sleep on left side,so will surely follow..N regarding sleep I get it very easily(touchwood).I do have slight back ache, but anyways can tolerate that pain..
anyways take care.

Rakhi replied. hi barish dhoop,
i agree that sleeping on the left side is the best position at this stage. i always used to sleep on my back, but since i knew abt my pregnancy, i made it a habit to sleep on the left side. it took a while but i am now quite used to it. but still i dont get proper sleep. once i get up to go to the bathroom, i dont fall asleep quickly. and now since the past 3-4 days, i am having low back pain early in the morning..so again it interferes with my sleep. i just keep changing sides until finally it is time to get up.
anyone else having back pain?
take care
