Due Date Club October 2003:Substitute for milk

Name: gee

I am new to this group though I have been reading all the messages in this group and i do that daily...
I am also an october mom and my baby boy was born on October 17th!
I live in bangalore , India
my baby has had mild eczema and so i have refrained from feeding him lots of milk and give him milk only in small quantities. I know thats the reason he has not gained weight nicely as his milk intake is just 3 to 4 oz only and the reemaining some other liquids.. juices and water apart from me breast ffeeeding him in the nights. He takes vegies, dal, rice, in mashed form and he likes them all...I am feeling really terrible for not giving him milk at all. Is htere anything else I can try to substitute for the things he is missing because of milk? Please let me know
Thanks
Gee

Hi Gee,

I am so sorry to hear about your son's eczema. My daughter has too, but severe one.

First of all, 3 to 4 oz of milk is way too less. Do you know what he's allergic to, are you sure it's because of something you eat.

I am not sure if you can get Nutramigen in India, but try given a hypoallergenic formula. If he's not allergic to soy, try giving a soy-based formula. Last option is to give goat's milk along with a vitamin supplement. Please please talk to your doctor, he would be the best person to evaluate your son's condition.

Good luck!

Hi ..
firstly welcome to the group..I didn't understand why u reduced milk..was it adviced by the doc? I have my close friend whose baby had eczema, did change formula but never reduced quantity. She uses elidel cream for her. If ur doc hasn't asked u to reduce, i would give him as much as he wants or maybe if u can increase ur breastmilk quantity by pumping more often (even if u don't get much milk)
If thats not possible, maybe u can give fruits in between as much as he can take so he is not hungry.
Eczema causes are different for different babies, have u found the cause of his eczema?
I do think u should ask this soln. to ur doc.
Take care..don't worry..i am sure someone in this group will helpout or guide u to the right source to get help from. bye.
Radhika

Thanks radhika!
Yeah his source of allergy is the lactose in the milk. so i give him less quantity and also dilut that. His Ped says he would outgrow this allergy by the age of 1. Hopefully he does. his another soruce of allergy is citrus frits.. so i stopped giving him citrus juices. he has mashed bananas, boiled mashed apples only.. what other fruits could I start him on.?

Theres a cream called locoid which does wonders for him.. fortunately his eczema has subsided very much as i have got the souce of his allergic tendencies and stopped those completely.
Vindhya you can also try it out that way find out the cause and slowly stop that. Hopefully she overcomes it soon.
Thanks for all your replies.

u can try dahi(yogurt) instead of milk..or maybe soy milk..but do ask the doctor before u give soy milk.
Bye
