Due Date Club September 2007:Weight gain

Hi! All,

Yesterday I had my doc. appointment. And saw that till now I ve gained 8 lbs. Though my doc. said, this much weight gain in 1st trimester is ok, but she also mentioned like ideally u shud gain 25 lbs during whole pregnancy period.

I have 1 national best seller pregnacy book by Nutan Pandit, which talks abt weight gain as :-
total weight gain shud be 20-25 lbs

The estimated rate of weight increase would be:-
1-3 months --- no weight increase
3-5 months --- 25 weight increase
5-7.5 months-- 50 weight increase
7.5-9 months -- 25 weight increase
9th Month -- no weight gain

Please dont take me wrong, as I m posting this info. when everybody else in this stage looks at how our diet shud b good.

Even I m not much concerned abt my weight gain (as my doc. has already told me that at this stage it looks ok.). Just felt like sharing this info.

For girls who were under-weight b4 pregnancy, there shud not b any concern. But, for others who were in normal weight range or over-weight, keep watch on ur diet. Eat only healthy, dont eat junk food at all like chips, any maida item, fried food.

I m going to start walking exercise from today. Have u all started exercises?

as far as my doc has said..if u r in the normal wt range pre pregnancy, then u shud gain no more than 25-30 pounds..that comes to be around 15 kgs max..

this is from an article on IP itself.

What is the ideal weight gain for a healthy pregnancy

A woman should gain anywhere between 25-35 pounds on average. In order that you have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby, you should aim for the following weight:
Weeks Weight gain (Pounds) Weight gain (kgs)

0-10 weeks No weight gain No weight gain
10-14 weeks 3-4 pounds 1.5 kg
14-20 weeks 4-6 pounds 2.5 kgs
20-30 weeks 10-12 pounds 4.5 kgs
30-36 weeks 6 pounds 2.7 kg
36-38 weeks 2 pounds 1.0 kg
38-40 weeks Almost no weight gain Almost no weight gain

Total 25-30 pounds* 12-14 kg

* You have a buffer of gaining 5 pounds either in the first few weeks or in the last few weeks.

How much weight should one gain during pregnancy

The amount of weight gained differs not only from woman to woman, but also from pregnancy to pregnancy. The welfare of both, the mother and the child is directly related to this. If a mother gains less than 20 pounds, then the baby is likely to be premature, small, and could suffer from growth retardation. There are risks involved in gaining too much weight as well. Excess weight overworks muscles and results in backache, leg pain, varicose veins and fatigue. Assessment and measurement of the foetus becomes more difficult and if the baby is too large, then vaginal delivery becomes close to impossible. Besides, all this excess weight will be hard to shed after delivery.

Ira, Ramya n Megs

Ira, I ll also check babycenter´ s weight gain estimator. And can u tell us what prenatal yoga u r doing? dont write it in detail jst a brief 1-2 liners, so that I ll get an idea, n I can also start some exercises. till now, apart from walking I m not exercising at all.

Ramya, no I was nt overweight before pregnancy. I was within the normal weight range, only inclined towards maximum range slightly.

Megs, I think u r going on very well as per wt gain is concerned. :-)

take care all of u.

yeah! Ramya i am in the same boat as you! i was already overweight...
ladies if in doubt... you get weight gain calculators over the internet... you can search and estimate how much weight you should gain according to your height and weight.
my midwife thinks i should gain about 15 kgs by the end of my pregnancy, my mom thinks 10 kgs. and the internet calculator thinks about 20 kgs...
anyway.. lets see...

yes.... i am also trying to walk twice for 1/2 hours morning and evening in a day, and i do prenatal yoga 3 times a week.

i had gained absolutely no weight until my 14th week.... and now in the 18th week (almost) i have gained 4 Kgs already/ well on bad days it' s 5 kgs! keeps varying between 4 and 5

my midwife was not overly concerned abt that.. so i choose not to worry... because along with walking twice.. i am also climbing stairs to 3 floors everytime i go out and come back( of course)

i am veryyyyy conscious abt my weight... after having done everything to keep it in control( a losing battle) so i was a bit depressed abt it..... but i have now realised... there' s no use worrying and fussing.. it' ll only make my little one distressed..... i am doing as much as possible.... because when i eat less.... i have bad tummy aches and constipation later... and my midwife also recommended eating more oil everyday to regularise my bowel movement!
so be happy ( same goes for me) and as long as i don' t see too much extra fat on me... i' ll let it go.

megs! your weight gain is fine... i am sure i have read somewhere.. that if you are underweight, you will gain about 30 kgs in the course of your pregnancy. that is absolutely fine.

and one of my friends who has had a baby ... said.. whatever you do.. you will gain weight... and it is also true.. that within a year and half after your delivery, you will lose all that you gain too..... because of running after the baby, and of course... you will try on your own too.... all in all it is absolutely possible to go back to your pre pregnancy weight...(unless you' re really lazy of course). so chill ladies
love
ira

Ira, your msg gave me as estimate from when I will gain weight...I am in 13th week and no weight gain...so in 4 weeks I think I will put on weight...

I think if we excericse now, after baby comes we can reduce it easily....

so lets not worry (i know its not at all easy...as I am so much worried about my future weight gain) and lets do some exercises....

love
ramya..

Hi Daisy,

Thanks for the info...its really useful..i was actually looking for such type of info...
How much over weight are you??
I am 3-4kgs overweight and all my family members expect that by the end of pregnancy may be I will become more than 80kgs...that will come to nearly 20kgs of weight increase for me...

So, I am trying to eat really very conciously...
when I drink milk..I am drinking low fat milk...and no fried foods or junk foods..
and I am eating more of sabji' s and dals and less of rice...

I have started walking....morning and evening I walk for 20mins each time..and in the night 40mins...

ok thats all from me
bye take care
ramya
