Due Date Club October 2007:Gestational Diabetes

Hi Everyone,
I have been diagonsed with gestational diabetes and iam kept on diet and exercise for one week.I am checking my daily blood glucose levels and iam able to keep them well under control. Now my doctor after seeing the three hour results of glucose tolerance test , wants me to have a pill for controlling my diabetes.
So my question is did anyone in this group take a pill? Is it necessary?Does it show any affect on the baby?

I would also like to acknowldege the fact that it would be better for us who have diabetes to share about our daily routine like diet and how we should take care of ourselves so that our babies will be fine..

HI S
During my last pregnancy i suffred with GD and was on a strict diet as well as insulin shots. Doctors never give any pills for GD because anything you take orally goes to the baby, which they don' t want to happen as the baby is perfectly alright and only ypu have a problem. I would suggest you to take opinion of another doctor before starting the pills.
take care

The common practice to manage gestational diabetes is to give a try with diet & exercise first. If it doesn' t help then generally Insulin is prescribed & not pills. Ofcourse recently there have been a few studies with oral hypoglycemics for GDM & they haven' t shown any particular adverse effects on the fetus. But still most of the consultants would go ahead with Insulin & not oral pills.

i haven' t done it but i heard about it. it is similar to ultrasound but much more clear. u will actully see the baby than just a figure. one of my friend did it. there is a fee for it.
they can even show u the gender very clearly than ultrasound. it is done around 20week.
