Due Date Club July 2008:Worried-5th month and cervix 3 cm only

hello all,
today I went for my 19wk ultrasound, and everything looked OK, baby is doing just good was very excited until I found that I have a smaller cervix, which is 3cm which is on the lower side according to my radiologist. Talked to my GYN about this over phone, she asked me to take rest for today and has called me tomorrow as early as possible. According to her there may be 2 possibilities, either I had a smaller cervix to begin with or my cervix size is decreasing over time due to condition caller cervix incompetency . I am very very scared, if its cervical incompetency then chances of losing baby is very high....this is my first pregnancy and everything was going fine so far, now I am so stressed, don' t know what will happen.....I am keeping my fingers crossed hope its not cervix incompetency ..... any suggestions from you guys?? please pray for me, can' t share all this with my mom, she is in India, don' t want to stress her out, I feel very very helpless
Ishi

Hello Reema, Riya and Rashi,
Thank you so much for your encouraging words...believe me this helps so much at the time of crisis. Now the good news, I just came back from doctors office, she checked my cervix with her finger to find if its consistency. She said that my cervix is tight , which is good, so she concluded that I have a smaller cervix due to my body shape and this is very normal. Thank you for all your prayers and good words. One thing I learnt from this experience is that, one should never jump to conclusions without consultation with the doc....
Hope all of you are having nice time
Ishi

hi ishi

i just did some research on the internet and i found something..

\" The researchers found that women whose cervixes had shortened to less than 25 millimeters in length by the time of the first ultrasound evaluation were 3.3 times more likely to give birth prematurely than were the other women in the study. Women whose cervixes had not shortened until later ultrasound evaluations were also more likely to give birth prematurely\"

So this essentially says that anything below 2.5cms is risky.. you say yours is 3cms.. so there maybe a chance that your radiologist has just scared you.. i don' t know for sure but don' t worry.. i am sure your doctor will reassure you and help you..

let us know how your visit goes..

hi ishi...

i hope things are not as bad as they seem right now.. please don' t jump to conclusions (though it' s easier said than done) i know u must be terribly worried but as reema says, it can be sorted out.. even i have read in What to expect when you' re expecting that if detected early then it can be mended.. but your doctor needs to see the report first.. also, i would suggest u get another scan done with another radiologist.. it' s always better to get a 2nd opinion in such cases.. i am hoping and praying u don' t have to endure any extreme situation.. have hope.. and take a deep breath and pray to God.. LOTS AND LOTS OF HUGS for your baby & you.. take good care of yourself..

love,
riya

incompetence cervix can b mended id detected early
docs put in a stitch or 2 so that the funelling stops
but i would say b strong if the funelling do continues there might b little hope
i can really understand what is happening in ur head and mind but still would say be positive
thsi might b jst a small hurdle
