First dont panic. I think that this happens with every boy in this age.
Talk with him - but talk not like a mother, talk with him like a friend, try to understand what is in his soul, why he do this and be patient. Ask your husbant to talk with him too - they are men so it will be easy.

First of all relax and don't be panic.
Kids often cooks up stories at this age. The reasons could be just to gain the attention. Secondly at this age they don't know much differnce between truth and lie so you have to be careful in handling this problem.
First of all try to talk to your son with an open mind. Everyday sit with him for some time and speak about how's his day what all he did in the school and other things. Is he playing some games, if not put him in some activity like swimming or music which wil divert his mind. Let him belive that you trust him and never scold him in front of others.

Tell him not to go to your neighbours house just cut off all your relations with them. Also if some boys don't let him play with them, than he should ignore them and try to play with some other boys. Tell him that he should be the one making friends of his choice.

Just divert his energy to other things and also tell him that you would reward him if he speaks truth.
R u working, how much time do u spent with him. Take him out on weekends and let him find a friend in you.
Once he realize that you would listen to his side of problem also he wont lie and would speak to u.
One more thing if u knwo that your son is not at fault than protect him in front of others. Be firm and say that I know my son, he can't do this thing.
