Due Date Club July 2005:milk again

I am so sorry to drag this milk topic but I have one more question.

If you are to boil the whole milk, and take away the cream, aren't you stripping it off the essential fat that is so required for the baby at this age. They say, half of the caloric intake of the baby should be fat until 2 years of age since they need all this energy as a toddler. And that's why we give them whole milk, and not skimmed or fatfree.

In India, yes, you need to boil it since its not pasteurized. But here in US it is right? Then why do you need to boil it? Everyone drinks it right out of the can. Am I wrong here?

Regards,
Sheetal

Sheetal,
Two points
1. Seema is quite right, each baby is different and so is the growth of two kids.
2. By removing layer of fat you are not taking out all the milk fat, I wish it was that easy to take out milk fat, we all would have way to make non-fat milk right at home. There are two types of milk fat, soluble and non-soluble. What you find as a layer is nonsoluble fat. If you boil longer then you tend to remove non-solutble fat at large extent but less likely be affecting soluble-fats.

comment on pasteurizaiton: I do not trust pasterurization made by industries when it comes to baby. Once the bottle is opened the efficacy of pasteurization is not going to be same as an air has plenty of bacteria and can enter in the opened bottle. Does not matter for a minute or longer. Knowing that milk is the complete food and mothers don't need affirmation to this statement that bacteria would be growin even in cold condition although not that speedy and sometime can be dangerous for baby but not to adults. Therefore boiling or re-pasterurizing each time is a best option when it comes to baby.

I have seen milk bottles those have expected expiration date but sometime it curdles two days before the date. Had that been totally safe pasteurized and that our opening of the bottle while pouring a portion would not affect should not cause curdling of the milk. This only tells that you need to re-pasterurize time to time to help maintain life of milk.

If you are all worried about removing lots of fat reduce the time for boiling the milk but let not baby suffer by you believing in lable.

Archie

hi sheetal. its better talk to your dr. every child is different. nishu was obese at 9 month. right now he is 23.5lbs so my dr has told me to avoid giving him fat. hence i stopped his cheese.so it all depends i guess on baby apetite, food habits and also as gift from elders.in my case my mil, my dh get fat even if they dont eat anything, so nishu is continuing that heritage.we consulted child dietician for him and we came with this result.
so pleasecheck with your dr.

Breast pumps
I am using a medela pump to feed my baby when I am out. The medela breast pumps are really a good choice for the working moms. We can pump the milk regularly and can store it and use whenever needed.... - dalewhither [View Message]
evenflo elan breast pump
Buy this pump! It’s made my life so much easier. I always got sore with my old Medela Advanced, but that never happens with the Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump. What really makes a difference is its ease of use. It’s really easy to switch between pumping phases and take apart to clean. Strongly recommend it for all mothers that pump daily.... - stellatylor [View Message]

try this
As we discussed earlier in this forum I used magnetic alphabets , through which he has learnt alphabets within a week. And number within 4 days.
It is as like take the letter and stick to it where ever he goes more and ask him to search a particular letter. this worked very well for me.
all the best... - Manju [View Message]
