Due Date Club January 2005:Am I worrying too much?

Dear friends,

Read Sush, Reena & Komal 's posts and was just thinking too much from then on...

Rishi does hold and walk, but he doesn't not walk still.

He does nothing other than smile at us when the phone rings and we are talking (max he does is try to pull the receiver)

He is so much at peace with playing by himself... like he can throw a toy, go get it and throw it in a different direction... or climb on a box for minutes together.

He is still not even waving bye, or clapping hands.

He says amma, appa, akka, anna, atha, thatha, akka(all the time) but is not able to relate... like... he still hasn't called Shyam appa even once. Or look at me when someone asks where is amma?

I am so confused. Is he alright? Everyone says that he is such a shanth bachcha and that he is a sweetheart and all that but...

He is all the time active and will not sit at one place for more than 2 minutes. He will not want us to carry him, and if we carry we should take him out. In the house he always loves to be on the floor playing.

Why is he taking time to interact with us? Why is he not picking up even basic clapping hands, or saying bye??????

Just wanted to share this anxiety with you guys 'coz if I ask mom she will get wild and say he is just taking time, he is fine :)

Love to you all and kisses to the chotus.

Vani

Dear Dear Vani,

i just tried calling, but couldnt get through. There is no reason to worry at all as like M said, each kid has its own agenda. Each mom ha her own set of anxieties, when something does not match with what the world tells us is \";normal\";.

Rishi is calm and is a very social child. You saw how Kich was behaving the other day -he's really not an adjusting baby, but Rishi is. And look at the variety of words he's picked up. You need worry if he was calling all of you appa.. Which he's not.

Have you ever seen whether he really NEEDS to call any of you? Our kids (Touchwood) get all the attention they want w/o asking, since their grannies are around.

Rishi throws a toy and goes to get it. Kichu throws something and waits for us to go get it!! And he is so dependent that it's become a bit of pain.. He is also lazy -that he doesnt cruise much unless he's super motivated..

And Rishi was so repsonsive to the Ads and music on TV, so its not as if he's not paying attention.

Lemme check with a few people around if we can find some consultant who'll advice us about this..

Pls dont get depressed dear, I've (and my amma has) seen Rishi and am telling you he's perfectly good.

Love and hugs
Paddoo

hi Vani
Don't worry too much..look back into your and Shyam's history ..were you late at your milestones..then try 1 week of stimulating activities..try the same things everyday everytime..like bye bye for everything everywhere, clapping for each time you are saying good boy Rishi..but if you are still concerned, talk to your ped for the address /contacts of any develpomental specialist(usually every good indian hospital hasone)to just talk things out..he could be simply developmentally delayed which after a bit of good stimu latory activities would put him at par...but start talking about your concerns and working onthem..try using ashadotorg which is the american sppeech and hearing association's website.. go into their link for developmental activities and checklists//also talk to your ped about these issues..talking helps..and keep working onRishi..he is at this great age that picking up will not be a concern if you routinely work with him..try thinking of it as his medicine which you have to give him no matter what then sit with him nomore than 15 minutes atleast 3 times a day working on similar activities...
and no you are not worrying too much..we would stop bein mom's then.
love
sush..

Hi Vani,
From my experience with a whole bunch of moms in our local mom's club, every child has it's own agenda. Vrisa is also still not walkiing on her own. She did take a few steps a few weeks ago but hasn't since. One of my very good friends has two boys. The older one started walking/talking much later than the second one. Same with another friend of mine who has two girls. the older one was talking proper words and putting together sentences when she was a year old and the younger one will be two next month and she is barely saying proper words. So I wouldn't worry. If you are concerned, talk to your pediatrician and express your concerns. It is their job to attend to your concerns and answer questions. Always remember, if you're anxious or stressed, the little one will catch it as well. Hope this helps. Much love to you and the little one.
~M
