hi friends
I went thru some of previous boards messages and thought i shall highlight few aspects which would be an eye-opener for most of us.
Actually Fetal presentation and Placenta position are two different aspect.
Placenta in over 95% cases is posterior fundal, means on top of the uterus on the posterior side, towards your spine. In less than 5% cases placenta could be partial or total previa or anterior fundal. Anterior fundal means covers on the tummy side of mother.
Baby posterior means baby is facing his/her back to mothers spine and anterior baby means baby is facing his nose, facial profile to mothers spine.
Most of the anterior placenta cases may have posterior baby means baby facing his/her back to mothers spine and facial profile towards mother's tummy. In this position engaging baby is somewhat difficult but not impossible and since baby's head will be right hitting on to pelvis bone a tough labor can be expected. Vaginal birth is possible but plenty of endurance and patience from both patient and OB is required.
However whether your placenta is in an anterior or posterior position does not make any difference to your pregnancy - although sometimes when the placenta is on the anterior wall of the uterus (the front wall), it can muffle the sound of your baby's heartbeat when the midwife listens to it through an ear trumpet, also called a Pinard's stethoscope, or a Sonicaid. Placental position during labour may become an issue, but only if the placenta is also lying low in the uterus, and covers all or part of your cervix. This is known as placenta praevia. Otherwise, placental position makes no difference to the birth of your baby.
hope this might be of some use to one or the other member.
cheers

(PS: I shall post abt baby positioning as a new thread)
