Hi Everybody,
Now I got some time to tell you about my birth story. It looks like a dream now. It all happened in a single unexpected day.
On thursday Nov 18th after I went off to sleep I started getting mild contractions. My husband and parents had slept and I could feel them in between my sleep. It was quite frequent but I was too lazy to time them or to disturb my husband. The pain was also bearable. I clocked the contractions from early morning and it was consistantly 8 minutes apart. Also I saw slight brownish discharge and period like cramps. I felt that today is the big day.
I called my doctor and she asked me to come for a checkup immediately. I was 2.5 cms dilated and doctor said it can take hours to couple of days. I was asked to call if the contractions were 4 to 5 minutes apart. I was little disappointed since he didn't say it is today. I came home and were relaxing. Around 1.15 pm while I was sleeping I felt a gush of water like a uncontrolled urination. I called the doctor and I was asked to go to the hospital. We hadn't prepared the hospital bag and in between contractions we did the laundry(!!!) and packed for the hospital. I was admitted in the hospital at 3 pm and was 4 cms dilated!!! The contractions were still time consistant and the pain was bearable. I did the deep breathing while contractions. They asked me on a scale of 1 to 10 10 being the worst what is my pain level. I said 4!!!
Luckily my doctor was on call that weekend in the hospital so she was attending me. They put me on IV fluid and after sometime on pictocin. Till 6 cms dilation I was able to manage without medication then I asked for IV medication. After it was given I felt very drowsy and the contractions became mild or I felt so. I was not mentally alert but could feel the contractions in the drowsy state. When the contractions became more stronger I told may be I should take epidural(that too with half mind). My doctor said you are almost there(10 cms) and it is time to push!!! I started pushing at 6 pm(i was told so). I don't remember how long I was pushing. I could see the baby's head with the mirror(I asked for it for effective pushing) nurses trying to help to get the baby's head out. My hands are shivering now to type this experience. I was not able to push properly because I was drowsy with medication. Atlast after 2.5 hrs :-( of pushing my doctor decided to use vaccum and got the baby out. It was a horrible pain for couple of minutes. It was like trying to poop a 7 lbs stool. Thatz exactly how they wanted me to push. My sweet little angel came out with a loud cry at 8.38 pm. I couldn't believe it is all over. They put the baby on my stomach and she stopped crying and started listening when i started talking to her. This is amazing that she knows who I am. I was soar and my legs/hips/thighs/hands were paining like anything after keeping in pushing position for 2.5 hrs. I got 10 stiches after the birth. In 15 minutes I delivered the placenta with a mild contraction. I can't belive that I could do it without epidural. I had decided to take it if the pain is unbearable. But it was not very bad for me. The tough part for me was pushing. I think I could hv done it better if I was not drowsy. Now I think probably epidural would be a better idea than to go through this pain, even c section would be okay too!!! Anyways it is all over now.
I'm recovering from my pains of stiches and pain all over the body and trying to cope with effective breastfeeding. It all disappears when I see my Shalika smiling in her sleep. It is amazing to feel that this baby is totally mine and totally dependant on me. For initial days the lactation consultant in the hospital told me that the colostrum I feed/produce would be enough for the baby. I took it literally and it was not enough for Shalika. She was crying even after feeding and I could not understand why. After I came home first day she cried so much that I had to take her to emergency in the midnight 3pm that same day I was discharged. They told me it was all hunger and I can give her some formula. She slept peacefully after she had formula. This was one lesson to me. I wonder why I was again and again told what I feed is enough for the baby. Nobody strongly told if what I feed is not enough I can give formula. They kept telling it is your decision whether you want to give formula, what you make is all what baby needs, nothing more. Feeding water is also not recommended by them. I got confused if she drinks formula she may not learn to breastfeed. Please remember this lesson, don't let your baby starve.
This is my birth story. Hope it doesn't sound scary or negative to you guys. I wish all who are waiting a easy and speedy delivery.
Take Care,
