Due Date Club February 2008:how to sleep
2007-10-11
Name: Asmi

Hi Girls,

I am in my 20th week and my belly is not growing much, actually 2 inch so far.

I have no problem with sleeping on my back. but I read on the boards and books that we should sleep on our left side.

Though with determination I start on left side, in the morning I wake up on right or back. Is it a problem? or will it cause any problem to baby' s growth?

My baby is doing normal so far. But I am worried about placenta giving it good supply and all due to me changing positions in night.

Does anyone have similar experience?

Asmi....RELAX...I am in the same boat...Tummy still not big enough. Start on my side but end up being on my back. Was so worried and talked it out with my doc.

CK is right. Sleeping on the back puts the weight of the growing uterus on a key vein carrying oxygen to your heart. Any interuption to the blood supply to your heart means less oxygen to the baby as well. However my doc said its not a panic situation. She said sleep on the side and if you wake up on the back just start all over again on your side (Am sure even you would be getting up atleast acouple of times at night like all us moms to be) The suggestion that helped the most was to start on your side and put a big pillow touching your back so even if you roll back subconsciously you will not fall flat on your back but would rather be on an incline, which is good enough. Really worked for me. Hope it helps you too.

All the best and once again relax !!!

After 20 weeks it is recommended to sleep on left side. You can change to right side for change in position, defenitely ' no no' for sleeping on back. Uterus weight will fall on the blood supply veins if you sleep on back, so pls don' t do that. Try to make it a habit, use a pillow on the side to enjoy sideways sleeping and comfort. Tummy growth will shootup starting from 6th month for first timers so don' t worry.

Thanks CK for this input.

Actually I start on Left side but in the morning I wake up on right or back, unknowingly.

Any idea how to avoid it?
