Routine Tests:Triple test results and getting amniocentesis

I had my triple test(blood test)done at 16 weeks. The result was slightly off so my gynae sent me for 2nd level ultrasound due to my risk of having baby with Downs syndrome, I am 33 years old. The ultrasound was normal and the growth of the baby matched my pregnancy. The only problem the perinatologist detected was that the umblical cord has 1 vein and 1 artery instead of 2 arteries, this is called single umbilical artery. So he has asked me to come back in 3 weeks and he will cont to monitor the baby till the end. I spoke to my gyanecologist and she said that since the US was normal she would not recommend me going for amniocentesis since there is risk of miscarriage. I am very confused, I do not want to loose a healthy pregnancy but do not want to have a baby with genetic disorders. Anyone any advice Please!!. There is no family history of downs syndrome and I already have a healthy 4 year old son.

HI ,I had a prenatest at 13 weeks and was told that my baby had a 1/40 chances of having down's syndrome - which is very very high. normally it should be 1/ 1000 or less. the only way to make sure was through an amnio . My OB told me that there was a 2-3% chance of miscarriage after an amnio but it happens very rarely. it was a tough decision to make .. i had waited 5 years to concieve this child and did not want to lose it. My first child is healthy and there's no history in the family of genetic disorder. If the child would be born with down's-- ther's no cure for it, he would never be able to have a normal life or enjoy life to the fullest as we would want our kids to.keeping this in mind we made the though decision to go ahead and have the amnio and leave the rest in god's hands... and i'm glad to say god took good care of us and everything is fine now. the amnio was negative and i'm expecting the baby on 26 Nov. So some times we have to make tough decisions and leave the rest to God.. so may god guide you through your tough time .. good Luck !!!
