Due Date Club July 2008:lower backache

Whenever I stand for long hours in the kitchen, like even 1 hour in a strech, makes my lower back ache like crazy. I live in the US, where temperatures in winter can go down to as low as
-15 F and windchill as bad as -25 F and up. Though I wear all crazy woollen stuff and go out compulsory,I still get severe lower backache after coming home. Walks from the parking lot to the malls, or home are enough to start an ache. Sometimes I also get cramps in legs or chills during night while asleep, even after we keep heaters on high and I wear enough warm clothes at home too.

What should I do? I cannot sit at home without fresh air all the time. My husband does apply cold and hot packs or ointment after which I' m relieved. Is anybody going through this same problem? I' m worrying what will happen when the baby' s weight increases after few more months. The winter here stays way untill April.

What can I do to prevent this backache? I will also talk to my gynac this week during my appt. Anyone living in extreme cold weathers and experiencing the same? Please share ur thoughts.

Thanks lalitha and Riya for ur responses. Actually I have started getting this lower backache everyday in the evenings now. Yesterday I was standing for just one and half hours cooking with intermittent rests but still I had such a painful backache at night. I could not even stand straight or put my left leg forward and walk. So, we applied a cold pack. After I wake up in mornings the pain is gone. It only happens when I stand in the evenings in kitchen for cooking, that too just for 1 hour. I think I should prepare one item and take a break then again get up and prepare another one and again take a break. When I enter the kitchen I just feel like getting over with the cooking all at once. But I' ll have to stop that and take it easy. I think sitting on a chair with cushion and straight back will also help. These soft couches are really bad for the backs, they seem comfortable but actually are the main reason for the backaches.

Thanks gals.

Hi Madhu

I am going for pregnancy Yoga classes, and one person who come there who is about 5 months preg, has severe backache. She was taught some asanas for the same, and she has found some relief. See if you can get a good yoga instructor to teach you.

hi madhu

i can completely relate to the backaches you are feeling right now.. even i get severe backaches especially after standing and walking.. so i rest in between of walks and standing.. recently i had a family wedding and went mad with the backaches after the functions.. so i can understand your problem..

yoga classes can be expensive in the US so it depends entirely on you but it is definitely helpful in soothing the pain.. i can´ t exercise till my 20th wk scan so i make sure to rest frequently when i get unbearable back pains...
