My doctor has given this: We require 263 g of carbohydrates, 123g of proteins, 72 gms of fat, 4 veg, 4 fruit and 4 milk exchanges per day.
If you see the nutrition facts for one cup of milk (8 oz), it has 8 gm of proteins, also 11g of carbs. Apart from that, cheese has lots of proteins and only 1 g of carb. I drink milk, yogurt, eat cheese for lunch and dinner (sometimes for breakfast), almonds, walnuts and other nuts and dals. I eat 1 chapati and a handful of rice in the afternoon and only one chapati for dinner. Along with that whatever sambar or subji is made, I eat. Thats it. Whatever you eat has a mix of everything - proteins, carbs, fats. So don't be counting too much. My doctor has given me a sample menu for 2200 cal. I follow that but not that strictly. Even extra spoons of veg salad will increase my numbers. So I have suited it according to my numbers. She recommended to eat a fruit along with lunch. But I eat it 2 hours after lunch.
She has given dinner menu followed by an evening snack at 8 pm and then bedtime snack at 11 p.m. However, I have my dinner only at 8 pm. So the evening snack goes to 6:30 pm. During bedtime I don't feel that hungry. So for the bedtime snack (which includes 1 bread exchange), I don't have bread, just milk and almonds. She gave me an American diet (with nonveg) and its not possible to literally translate it to Indian diet (am a vegetarian). As long as I follow 4 fruits, 4 veg and 4 milk exchanges, its fine. A little bit of everything adds to a lot. Since my doc regularly monitors the baby's growth, I know that my baby is doing fine. In GD, the problem is overgrowth of baby. Whatever little glucose in our blood, reaches the baby fast. Thats why they advise us to exercise and use up that sugar. We should be careful about that. It creates problems to the baby when its born and after that. I don't want to scare you by saying all that my doctor said.
And remember, drink home made lemon juice with no sugar (sometimes instead of water) or eat grapefruit, because, to break down proteins and to absorb iron, we require vitamin C. Don't take any dairy product with iron, u shd take vit c after u eat things with iron. Ensure that you don't starve. Otherwise, ur body will start burning fat and then it will result in ketones which is bad. Drink lots of water to wash away the ketones.
This is what I have understood in the 40 days of my diet. I follow this, but I suggest you seek your doctor's advice on everything, because each individual differs and each doctor differs. I wouldn't recommend anyone to follow my way, so please don't do that. Just that I have shared with u what I do. Kindly talk to your doctor before u do anything.
Take care,
Mom to be.
