Due Date Club October 2003:Breast Pumps.....

Hi girls,

Hope you all are doing fine. One of my friend had asked me to buy a breast pump. She said that for the first few months we will produce lots of milk and so we can use the breast pump and store the milk in the fridge and use it later.
She also said that we can use that milk when we go out with the baby. She said that it will be difficult to breast feed the baby in the public and moreover it will be winter at that time and we will wear lots of clothes to cover ourselves. So what are you girls planning. Please share your plans so that i can decide whether to buy a breast pump or not. Also please suggest a brand for it.What feeding bottles are you girls going to use for your baby?.Have you guys bought it already?
Thanks
Take care girls
Love from

Hi Savi,

You get to buy bottle warmers, which evenly warm the milk. But if you choose to use a microwave, just ensure that you stir/shake the milk and check the overall temperature of the milk prior to feeding the baby. To defrost the milk, just leave it out in normal temperature for a short while, else use auto defrost on your microwave.

Hi
Even my frends suggested me to use Pump.
I also plan to get Medella Pump'nStyle thats the best I suppose. Dont waste money on cheap ones as they r very painful I heard.
Yes Pumps increase the milk production, esp with twins it will be a blessing for me. I dont like to freeze it for now, but I heard u can just refridgerate it if u plan to use it within 24hrs. I need lots of rest with twins so if I pump my parents or my hubby can feed the babies thats my plan.
Also these pumps are double breasted so u can pump simultaneously and do it faster.
Its better than renting. It costs around $275. I plan to buy in Hospital itself as soon as I deliver and ask the lactation consultant and nurse to teach me everything.
Hope this helps

Hi Kals,

Sumana has given us very composite info on breast pumps, both manual and electric. I plan to buy Medela electric breast pump, so that I can pump at work also, and this is supposed to be of the quality given by hospitals. I thought instead of renting for 3 months or more, might as well buy a good one, since it will be useful for Baby No. 2 also.....I have heard good things about the Avent model too.
Dont forget to freeze the milk, dont just place it in the fridge, it has to be in the freezer.

Take Care
Suni

Hi Kalyani,

Your friend is right. We will have to use breast pumps in the first few months since the production of milk will be more and there might also be a problem of engorgement etc.
I have researched about breast pumps and found that Avent Isis breast pump is good and even Medela Breast pump is very good. These 2 are manual pumps.
There is also electric pumps which are very costly around 200$-300$, but you can also rent them from the hospital, but even they are around 60$/mth.
I hope this helps u in deciding what to get.

Take Care,
Sumana
