Due Date Club April 2007:High BP, please advise

Hi,
I have just completed 20 weeks and at my last visit to the gynae 4 days ago, my bp had gone up to 160/110. Before pregnancy, my bp has always been low, around 110/70 but after the 2nd month it has been around 140/90. My doc has put me on methyldopa 250 mg thrice a day, and asked me to check my bp every day. She also asked me for a urine test for any protien leakage. The urine test has come negative for all protien, bile salts and sugar and after the medicine my bp has also come down to 120/80. The only problem is that I can barely stay awake with the medicine, almost immediately after taking the medicine I have to go to sleep and if I try to stay awake, I get headaches, nausea and vision blurring. Once I even vomitted. I work so obviously this does not help at office and I am at home for most of this week. What I want to know is that when the bp has stabilised, would it be still necessary to take the medicine and for how long? And will the side-effects of the medicine go away after some time? I have my big ultrasound in two days time, should I take the medicine before that? Would it effect the baby in anyway?
thanks...

Kalika,
Methyldopa is your option and would have to take through out the pregnancy though BP is in range when on medication. There is a risk of sudden increase in BP if you discontinue which could have severe side effects than taking medicine. No matter how you hate try to relax and enjoy life, this is a medication for hypertension, see if you have some stress that you can alleviate to help maintain BP even when you take medicine.

Thanks Archie,
I don't know why my bp is going high like this because for the past one month or so, I have actually been quite relaxed and enjoying my second trimester. I am only concerned that this medicine which is making me so sleepy all the time, will have some adverse effect on the baby.
thanks!
